Ch. 4

Jason Todd P.O.V

I slumped against the counter, then slid onto one of the barstools. I popped my helmet off and set it on the large island. I heard Dani sigh from behind me as he went to fetch the first aid kit.

"Well, don't sigh like it's my fault!" I snarked.

"No, but you could be more careful," he said as he came back with the med kit.

"He had a knife!" I defended.

"So did the ones I fought," he said with a smirk.

I couldn't help, but smile at his cockiness. He glanced up briefly to meet my eyes as I smiled. He pulled his mask off and set it on the counter, then pulled out some needle and suture.

"Come on," he said. "Let's get this over with."

I pulled the neck of my shirt down, revealing the wound on my shoulder. He dabbed the wound with some cotton, then began to sew it shut.

"Damn!" I winced.

I heard him scoff from behind me.

"I thought you were supposed to be tough," he said.

"Oh, shut up, Dani," I replied.

He laughed a little as he finished the stitch, then rubbed my shoulder in a comforting manner.

"There, that one's all done. Any others?"

"No, that's all tonight," I said as I pushed myself to my feet.

I waddled over to the living room and plopped down on the couch, flicking on the tv. A few moments later Dani walked into the living room as well.

"Get your bloody ass off my couch," he said blatantly.

I chuckled as I slid off the couch and sat in front of it, leaning my back against it. He sat down on the couch behind me a moment later and held out a beer over my shoulder.

I gratefully took the bottle and brought it to my lips.

"Well," I said as I swallowed a swig of beer. "We've taken down nine deals over the past few weeks and we're no closer to figuring out where Sionis moved to."

"We'll get him, Jay," he said from behind me. "We just need to keep working at it."

I sighed in frustration, standing up and walking over to the windows.

"What if we don't? What if we can't catch him and he gets away, only to hurt someone else another day?"

There was a few moments of silence, then I felt Dani's arm wrap around my middle and he stood next to me, he grabbed my arm with his other hand.

"We will get him. He won't get away with what he's done," he said. "We just need to give it some time."

I sighed again, causing me to see Dani look over to me on the corner of my eye. I stared at the skyline a moment longer before looking over to him. His hand was wrapped around my bicep as he met my eyes. His nose was only a few inches from mine and I could feel his breath on my face. His steel blue eyes were locked on mine, occasionally dropping down to my lips before going back up.

My body felt hot and all I wanted to do was lean forward and give in, but I knew that wasn't a good idea. I looked away before either of us could act on our emotions.

"I know we'll get him..." I said. "We have to."

I watched on the corner of my eye as Dani released his grip on me and looked away from my face.

"...yeah," he said. "I'm gonna get in the shower."

I nodded as he walked off.

Once the door to his room shut and I knew he was out of sight I sighed and kicked the ground.
