CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR

Travis looked at me almost bursting in to fits of laughter but he held himself

"What do you mean ?" He asked completely oblivious to the harm he was bringing himself

"I need to hide you where nobody will find you as I get into the kingdom, and as soon as I found my parents okay I'll come back for you."

He nodded as I led him to a cave that was close to the boundary.. one that Anita and I constantly played hide and seek.

"The opening will allow you see everything that goes on in the gates. So while you are here, you can watch who enters and who leaves okay ? And please don't follow me again, this time I may be late to save you."

I told him as I attempted to swim away
"Can I at least get a kiss please ?" He asked pouting with puppy eyes it was difficult to say no

I went closer to him and locked my lips with his. Even though it wasn't the first time we were kissing , it felt like it actually was the first time.

Before we could deepen the kiss, I broke it and turned to leave

"I'll be back."

The moment I swam into the kingdom , a cold shiver ran down my spine as a cold feeling settled down at the pit of my stomach .

I was tempted to think it was Travis but then the cave was only known to Anita and I because it was well hidden.

And then I realized that something was terribly amiss. The gates had new guards who I did not recognize and they were making it hard for me to get in.

"The queen demands that no new comer gets in without her permission !" One of them snarled

"Then go and her tell her that the princess, her second daughter is here waiting for her !" I snarled back

For a second their eyes widened before resuming their stoic expression as one of them swam away .

"You don't know me? How and why ? All the guards in the palace know me so how comes you don't?" I asked my curiosity getting the better of me

"Go ask your queen if at all she decides to let you in. " The one who snarled at me answered yet again

"If at all she lets me in? Why would my father not let me in? Where is my father the King?" I asked as each of his answers spiked a new interest providing puzzles instead of answers.

"Maybe you should wait and see for yourself !" He snarled barring his teeth at me clearly annoyed with my questions

I looked at the other one who had remained silent through out the whole exchange and the emotions that were evident in his eyes was another thing all together.
I could see pain, sorrow,and maybe...hope ? I thought I just imagined those emotions because in a flash he had his stoic face back.

The other guard who had gone to tell my mother that I was present was taking long to come back and so I started getting impatient.

"Why isn't he coming back ?" I asked exasperated

"Could you at least shut your mouth kid! I could use some silence over here !" Mr always annoyed snarled at me

I had to resist the temptation of choking him now but I didn't know him so I didn't know his strength and weakness. I became the bigger one and shut down swimming to and fro waiting for the messenger.

"If he doesn't come back in two minutes....

I don't get to finish my statement as the other guard comes back shaking so bad you would think he had caught a cold which was very rare to us mermaids.

"Brandon, the Queen demands you to escort her to the throne room. She is waiting for you there."

Mr always annoyed looked me up before mentioning for me to follow him.

As I got inside the gates, everything felt odd. The place where mermaids used to swim everywhere laughing and talking to each other socializing was empty.

Where had all those people gone to ?
As if to answer my question I heard russtling and when I looked closer, I was met with little green eyes as the mermaid kid hid behind a reef looking so scared.
I was going to ask him or her what was keeping him there scared when I was met with several other pairs of eyes.. ranging from kids to adults.

Those who were in their chambers looked through the walls avoiding being seen by anyone.

"What happened to all these people ? They are supposed to be happy dancing in the open. There are no more toxic substances to harm them. " I stated not liking the way they looked scared and even roughed up

"Ask that to the Queen when you talk to her , it's her orders that are running now in the kingdom."

"What about my father ?" I asked probing further

"Ask her that too. She knows where he is !" Now don't ask any more questions unless you want her wrath to befall you !" Mr always annoyed who I learned was called Brandon replied with a smug expression .

"Yes sir !" I countered sarcastically

"I like you already. You play so tough and everything but I wonder for how long will it last ?" He commented dryly

"What is that supposed to mean ?"

"That's for me to know and for you to find out."

I could hear whispers going around as the eyes followed me on my way to see the Queen.

"She saved us from the humans what about our own kind?....

"I hope she saves us again...

"She is strong...

"She stands no chance against her...

"Let's just hope for the best....

I had heard enough of those whispers so I stopped and looked at the reefs hiding many mermaids

"What are you people talking about?" I demanded

Nobody made an effort to answer me as they recoiled back in the reefs as Brandon dragged me into the throne room.

I snarled at him as I boiled in rage
"Mother what is going on ?"

When I received no answer , I turned back to look at my mother's chair and all air was knocked out of my lungs as my eyes feed on the scene before me.
