Chapter 21

Marcus Kane's POV

Eighteen years ago...

"Push!" The midwife commanded.

"I- I can't-" Ellie cried, and laid her head back to rest for a minute.

I wanted to go in there. I wanted to go in and tell her she could do it. I wanted to be apart of our child's birth... but with Andrew there, that was never going to be an option.

"You can, sweetheart," Andrew encouraged, and I rolled my eyes.

Who calls their wife, 'sweetheart'?

I couldn't ever use those names. She was just Ellie to me. My Ellie.

Well... at least I wished she were mine.

"Just one more big push and you'll be parents!"

This even got me ready to push even though it wasn't me in labour.

"That's it!" The midwife exclaimed. "She's here!"

She? I had a daughter?

"Congratulations, you have a beautiful baby girl."

I remembered my eyes being exhausted by tears as I watched the newborn from the glass cling onto her mother and fake father.

That was my moment. That was my child. Why was the world so cruel when it came to my happiness?

"She's beautiful," Ellie choked up, letting the child take her finger.

"Do we have a name for the littlest Brady?" The midwife asked and I found myself wanting to break the glass and tell her the baby was a Kane, not a Brady.

"Yes, we do," Ellie smiles hard. "Her name is Quinzel Rae Brady."

Little Quinn. She had gone with my suggestion.

"That's beautiful," the midwife complimented. "Okay, now lets get you-"

A horrifying noise was made by Ellie before the midwife could finish her sentence.

"What's wrong with her?" Andrew questioned, taking the child from his wife's arms.

The midwife peered down and said the most dangerous crime known.

"There's another baby coming."

Billie's POV

Let me at him.

I'm going to kill him.

He needs to die.

"Kane, Billie claims she's your daughter, and Quinn's twin," Abby explains as they stand a small distance away from me.

Any closer, and I can reach him.

Kneeling down to look me in the eyes, his eyes become glassy fast.

"Billie?"

What is he trying to do?

"This isn't possible," he says. "When we sent you down... I mean I always wondered if you... but I never thought I'd see you again."

Yeah, thanks to him and all the other assholes from the sky.

"Please say something."

Looking him straight in the eyes without even blinking, I say, "I'm going to kill you."

He seems taken back by my words and for a moment doesn't say anything, allowing me to make my move.

I lunge towards 'dear old dad' and manage to tear the skin on his face a little. Sure, my nails aren't sharp. But any chance I get to leave my mark, I'll take it.

Kane backs up as soon as blood is drawn, startled by my previous action.

What's wrong, dad? Did you not take my threat seriously enough?

"Kane, we better-" Abby tries, though he shakes her off.

"No, Abby. It's alright."

Is he serious? Does he want to go in for round two? I can promise he won't make it alive if he does.

"You look just like your sister," Kane comments.

The last thing I want is to compared to that weakling.

"You know I was surprised you both were blonde," he says with a smile. "Figured you take after your mother or-"

"Or you?" I finish for him.

"Yeah," he continues to smile. "Guess you both were lucky in that department."

"Lucky?" I scoff. "If you think that either one of us have been lucky in our lives, you are sadly mistaken."

"I didn't mean to offend you-"

"No, but you did mean to send your daughter down to die," I snap.

"Billie, I- I had no choice. The ark had a one-child policy and-"

"And what? You clearly didn't raise Quinn, so why didn't you keep me?"

"Because no one knew you were mine," he explains. "Your mom and I had an affair."

Great. Both my parents are sluts.

"Andrew Brady didn't know he didn't father you two so they followed the rule and only kept one of you."

"Quinn," I roll my eyes.

"She was the firstborn."

"So, what? I matter less?" I snap, wondering why everyone loves Quinn more than me.

"That's not what I meant."

"But that's what you said."

"Billie, I wanted to keep you. I really did. But-"

"But you were a coward and didn't man up so instead, you let your daughter go down to earth alone, sending her to a world full of pain, anger, and abandonment."

What kind of father does that?

"You make me sick," I spit in his face.

"Billie, please-"

"Get out before I rip your tongue out!" I demand.

He doesn't move until I reach out and attack his face again. He's deeply hurt as he looks me in the eyes. Not because of the tear on his face, but by the cruel words that flop out of my mouth.

Good.

His eyes are glassy as Abby grabs his arm and pulls him up.

"Come on, Marcus," she says. "Leave her be."

Kane's POV

It breaks my heart to see my daughter turn away from me, carrying lots of anger and resentment with her. I only wish I could make things right, and that I could hold her in my arms again...

Flashback

"I love you, Billie," I smiled, kissing her slightly on the forehead. "I love you with all of my heart."

Please forgive me.
