It's been 2 months since the miscarriage and everything is finally back to normal, well normal for us. Terrell's been at the mafia everyday and I've just been healing emotionally and trying to figure out what direction I want to take in life. Terrell insists that I don't have to find a career path because he makes plenty doing what he does, but I don't want to rely on him more than I already do.
There's a big job coming up at the mafia and Terrell's been staying later to get the details sorted out. I made pasta and decided to bring him some dinner. I packed a bag and I texted him to let him know I was on my way.
Once I got there, Handsy opened the door for me.
"Nice to see you, Princess," he says.
"Nice to see you too, Handsy," I laugh.
"Oh! I brought you dinner, too," I say eagerly as I pull a bowl out of my bag and hand it to him. He smiles wide.
"Thank you! I'm starving. Boss has been having us work so late on this one," he says as he takes the bowl. I can tell he really appreciates it.
"Is it a dangerous one? He doesn't like to talk in depth with me about them," I say.
"They're all dangerous princess. This one involves a child. He's trying to figure out how to complete the job without causing any harm to the kid," he says. Terrell has been working on this for weeks. Why wouldn't he tell me there was a child involved?
"Thank you for the dinner! You should probably go see him," Handsy says. I smile before heading up the stairs. I walk into his office and he's clearly frustrated.
"Knock knock," I say. His head snaps up and he smiles.
"Hey," he says. He stands and walks over to greet me. He does so with a hug and a kiss before returning to his seat. I sit across from him. I take two bowls out of my bag so we can eat together. I hand him a plastic fork and he thanks me before digging in. I eat slowly. I want to bring this up I just don't know how.
"How's it coming along?" I ask.
"Slowly," he says with a mouth full of food. Fuck it.
"Handsy mentioned that there was kid involved. Why didn't you tell me?" I ask calmly. He looks up.
"You and 'Handsy' are way too close," he laughs.
"Well he tells me stuff that you tend to keep to yourself," I say.
"What's his real name anyways?" I ask.
"Marcus," he says as he shoves food in his mouth.
"Hmm, he doesn't look like a Marcus," I mumble.
"You're not answering my question. Why didn't you tell me?" I ask again.
"I don't know. I guess I wasn't sure if it was too soon. I didn't want to pour salt on the wound," he says.
"You lost a baby too. You don't have to deal with this alone," I say.
"I know," he says with a small smile.
"Are you leaving after this?" He asks.
"Well I thought since you have to work a bit later, that we could crash here tonight. If that's okay?" I say.
"It's perfect," he says.
After dinner, we head to his bedroom and he jumps in the shower. I see a file sitting on the dresser. That's what he's working on. The water is still running so I walk over and open the folder. I see a photo of a small little girl. I see a section of information and begin reading. Her name is Maria. She's six years old and her mother died on a drug overdose and her father is a child abuser. I flip to the next page and it has a photo of her father. He's covered in tattoos and looks evil.
I flip to next page and it shows that a local gang is paying Terrell $120,000 to kill this man, no matter the lengths. That's how Terrell gets all this money. I mean I'm not shocked. That's how mafias work. They do illegal business for money. I just worry that no matter the lengths, involves hurting Maria.
The water shuts off and I quickly close the folder and put it back before running to my side of the bed. I sit down and pick up my phone to act normal. The bathroom door opens and he's wearing sweatpants. He's drying his hair with the towel.
"You're sleeping in that?" He asks.
"What? Oh- no. I just haven't changed," I stumble on my words. I stand and quickly change into a pair of clothes I brought. I crawl into bed and he does the same. God this is killing me!
"I'm a horrible person!" I groan.
"Why?" He asks.
"I snooped," I say. He sighs knowing exactly what I'm talking about.
"I'm sorry! It was there and you won't tell me anything about it and-"
"Because I'm trying to keep you safe. But apparently you can't live with that," he says. He doesn't seem angry, maybe just annoyed.
"I try. I've just been going insane with it being summer, I don't have anything to get my mind off stuff. You do," I defend. He considers.
"You read the whole thing?" He asks.
"Most of it," I answer.
"What are your thoughts?" He asks.
"Really?" I ask.
"Yeah. It would be nice to hear something from a different point of view," he says.
"What if you got Maria away before doing anything to her father? That way she won't be near any danger," I suggest.
"She has no other family. If I kill her father- when I kill her father, she'll have no where to go," he says.
"Have kids ever been involved in this stuff?" I ask.
"Rarely, but it happens. I just wasn't ever the one to make the final call," he says."Now, the decision is up to me and I can't live with myself if I make the wrong one," he says. I can see how stressed out he is about it.
"What will happen to her when he dies?" I ask.
"Foster care I guess. Social services will figure it out. Normally when young kids are involved they just get dropped off at the hospital. I've never had to do that," he says.
"That is sad," I mumble.
"Can we go to sleep now?" He questions. I nod and flip off the lamp before crawling up into his arms. I just can't get Maria out of my head.
