(A/N alternate ending where Steve wakes up on the riverbank before Bucky can leave)
"Everyone keeps telling me you're the bad guy." The Winter Soldier was startled. He thought Captain America had passed out. "I don't believe them. You're just their puppet."
Bucky drew his gun and pointed it at Steve, who lifted his arms in surrender. He didn't say a word, but Steve could see the conflict in his eyes.
"You haven't killed me yet." Steve said gently. "And I think I know why. You do too."
The Winter Soldier took a sharp breath, and tightened his grip on the gun. Why was this man so different from his other targets? The Soldier couldn't deny that something was stirring in his brain. "That's enough." But he couldn't bring himself to shoot.
"Bucky, you know me." Steve pleaded, and he could see Bucky fighting himself. "It's Steve. Your friend."
"Steve died in the ice." The Winter Soldier said shakily. It had never made sense how Captain America was here, and yet his friend, who was Captain America, had died. It hadn't mattered. "They just replicated the suit." And the person, the serum. Wasn't that why he'd been experimented on?
Captain America stood, and the Soldier made no move to stop him. "Hydra has fallen. You're safe." The Captain insisted.
The Winter Soldier glared at him. "Why should I trust you?"
The Captain sighed. "September of 1934. We snuck into that carnival, remember? We got caramel apples and sat by the lake?"
The Winter Soldier- no, Bucky- remembered. "You took your shoes off and lost the newspaper in them. I stole another paper to stuff in there so your shoes would fit." Bucky smiled for the first time in decades.
Steve smiled too. "You remembered."
Bucky wrapped him in a hug. "Now I do. Thank you, Steve."
Suddenly, the sounds of a helicopter rang through the air. "Come out with your hands up!"
The two men looked at each other, and Steve gave a small nod. They took off through the woods, silent as cats. They ran for hours before tiring, and by then, they were near the city.
Steve snuck them up to his apartment, where Bucky has second thoughts. "Rogers, you know what'll happen if you go with me."
"I don't care." Steve said, packing his bag.
"You have so much here for you-"
"None of it matters if I can't be with you." Steve said. "We'll get away from here, get an apartment of our own. I know a place to stay until then. I lost you once, I'm not losing you again."
And the two friends stood there a moment, just taking each other in. After so long, they were together again, and they wouldn't let go.
Eventually, Bucky nodded. "I'm with you till the end of the line."
And with that, they set off for whatever lied ahead, knowing they would face it together.
(Hi what's up just a random thought to end the chapter if cats could teleport they'd teleport directly into the food bag and eat their way out ok bye see you next chapter)
