Never would Zhan want to wait on the other side of the operating door again. It was a dreading situation leaving him wrecking his nerves with the uncertainties behind the closed doors.
His own clothes are still covered with Yibo's blood and the feeling of the cold flaccid body pressed on his chest earlier lingered on his flesh. His anxiety keeps on sky rocketing in every passing second, while his fears were getting out of hand.
"Why are they taking so long to come out?" Zhan murmured, bouncing his legs in fast rhythms while clasping and un-clasping his shaky fingers.
He is overwhelmed with worry, and the image of Yibo's melancholic smile keeps visiting his consciousness. His already broken heart keeps on breaking whenever it comes to mind.
'If something happens to Yibo...' he cursed, fisting his hand into a ball, pushing away the thought of the ominous 'what if'.
"He'll be alright. The injury is just minor." Zhuo Cheng patted Zhan's shoulder for reassurance, although he himself is worried why the operation for stitching a laceration is taking hours instead of minutes.
Zhuo Cheng's worry was replaced by a run of cold sweat when the speaker broke the silence and announced a Code Blue to Yibo's surgery room.
"Zhuo Cheng! What's happening?! Why are they rushing to Yibo's theatre room?!" Zhan gripped Cheng's arm with tight pressure as the remaining colour in his face quickly faded.
"T-That's an emergency call, Zhan." Zhuo Cheng answered, gently squeezing Zhan's hand. "I-It means, he..." Cheng trailed off. 'What's the right word to say?' Cheng was conflicted. He had notified and spoke with family members for hundreds of times explaining such life-and-death scenario, but when it comes to his own family, his own cousin, no word seemed suitable enough to convey the bad news without breaking the already broken man.
Zhan's eyes watered understanding Zhuo Cheng's hesitancy.
"Let us wait and hope for the best." Zhuo Cheng gently told Zhan. "Dr. Hai Kuan is with him. I'm sure he would do everything to save his brother."

Another hour passed, finally Hai Kuan walked out of the emergency theatre. His expression was restrained and collected, but his eyes gave out his true feelings. They were visibly red and swollen. Zhan quickly ran to him, impatiently waiting for a good news.
"He is alive."
That three words lifted the heavy weight from Zhan's chest.
But it was only for a fleet moment.
Hai Kuan's shoulders began to tremble and his eyes turned redder with his stubborn tears. Another senior colleague behind him stepped in and spoke in his stead. "The patient went into shock from too much blood loss and went into cardiac arrest. He is currently in coma."
"Y-You mean..." Zhan trails slowly, not wanting the undesirable words to come out from his own mouth.
"He's sleeping Zhan. And we don't know when he will wake up, or if he will ever regain his consciousness again." Cheng explained with a glossy sadness in his eyes.
Zhan's world swayed with the implications of those words. He fell on his knees and his arms hanged flabby on his sides while his eyes are wide, staring at the floor, but not really seeing. He can feel his insides contracting from the coldness from his chest. His mind was slowly shutting down, until a familiar pitched voice pulled him back to the present.
