When I woke up, it was still a bit dark outside. Getting up I moved to the bathroom and prepared for the day. I tried to be as quiet as possible moving around so Haruhi could stay asleep. I made my way quietly through the house and looked outside, it was brighter outside but not because of the sun rising. Snow littered the ground. It is late November but it rarely snows in Japan. Although I don't remember much of the trip up, I guess we were at higher elevation then.
I boiled some water and made myself some tea, grabbing a blanket I walked outside and sat on a bench. The snow was light as it danced in the air. Fluttering flakes falling effortlessly to the ground. The sun was starting to rise, the clouded sky turning a lighter gray.
"You are up very early." A deep voice spoke and I flinched looking up to see Ritsu.
"You scared me." He chuckled and sat beside me. "I am a bit used to waking up early every Saturday. I also got more sleep than usual."
"You went to bed six hours ago."
"I know, I usually get four hours." I smile, sipping the tea as it warmed me from the inside out. "I also wanted to make breakfast for everyone."
"Do you always cook this frequently?"
"We talked about what happened to my father, cooking became a force of habit to protect myself. Besides Haruhi, I don't know if you guys know how to cook." I smirked, he only rolled his eyes.
"I'm sure one of us guys know how to cook."
"Plus what I have planned is an American classic, pancakes! I make it for my brothers all the time." Ritsu stood up up and offered a hand. Holding the blanket and my cup I take his hand as he lead me inside. Sun was now up and soon enough the boys will be up too. I set the blanket down on the couch and stepped into the kitchen. Looking through the pantry I gather my ingredients and supplies to make pancakes. Tying my hair into a small pony, washing my hands and tying an apron around me, I instructed Ritsu to do the same. I handed him a hair tie and gathered my cold ingredients.
"Alright now we are feeding a total of seven people, mostly men that have higher appetites. To be safe we will multiply the recipe by three." I spoke to myself and handed him the flour and instructed how much flour to put in the bowl. A cloud of flour puffed up and I chuckled at the flour he had all over himself. He glared at the empty space in front of him and I could tell he was becoming frustrated.
"Its okay, it happens all the time no matter how careful you are." Kasanoda didn't calm down though so I poked the flour before poking his nose which he faltered and looked at me. "Trust me its okay. This is a learning experience, flour is messy." He took a deep breath and I poured some sugar into the bowl as well as the butter. I handed him the eggs, he was extremely careful not to get any shell bits in it. I finally added the milk, salt, and baking powder.
"Now I like to add vanilla to my pancakes, don't put too much in. A little goes a long way." He added a small amount and I began mixing. Flour puffed up hitting the apron as well as my arms.
"Is it supposed to be that thick?"
"As much as I would love to make a joke, yes after cooking it becomes this cakey deliciousness. Some add fruits, I add chocolate chips, some add peanut butter, syrups, and even honey." Once I saw the lumps were gone, I started heating up the flattop the kitchen had to offer. Most of the boys were up, as well as Haruhi as they gathered admiring the weather outside.
"Stay inside, breakfast is almost done. Now give me your topping orders. Fruit, chocolate, peanut butter, or syrup." They all gave their orders and I set out plates. "Ritsu, can you put the toppings on as I put the pancakes on each plate?" He nodded. I placed newly cooked pancakes on two plates. "One plate gets fruit, for Haruhi. Second gets honey for Tamaki." I poured more batter as he brought out the plates and served Tamaki and Haruhi.
