Tendou was a sly manipulator who nobody trusted.
Ushijima was a miracle boy with a little too much curiosity.
Upon meeting, they both thought they would be like everyone else, but to their surprise they're nothing like anyone they've ever seen befor...
A week went by and everyone was getting more used to the school. Both Ushijima and Tendou studied the map of the school many times so they won't embarrass themselves like that again. (and don't have to ask for directions) They also started walking home and eating lunch together most days. As they found out, they only live a few blocks away from each other so they're bound to bump into each other at some point.
Tendou, of course, was usually the one to initiate this, but Ushijima never denied.
"Alright everyone."
Kondo started, everyone going silent.
"After practice today I want you all to exchange phone numbers. I already have all of your's from the sign up sheet, I'm gonna make a group chat for the team."
Everyone talked among themselves.
"Yes captain."
They all said after a moment. Practice that day wasn't easy, as usual. Kondo always made sure to work the team to the bone, wanting to make sure they're the best fore real games.
They had done another run around the neighborhood, a chance for Ushijima and Tendou to prove themselves, and they did manage to get back to the club room on their own. Afterwards, everyone stayed behind to exchange phone numbers and then headed home.
"Ushi-kun!"
Tendou yelled, catching up to the olive-haired boy as he did every day.
"Hello, Tendou."
The red head smiled sweetly at him and stuck his hands in his pockets.
"What'd you put my contacts as?"
Tendou questioned, pulling out his own phone.
"Yours?"
Ushijima pulled ho Tendou's contact on his phone.
"Um, Tendou."
The shorter boy looked at him with a confused face.
"Seriously? That's so basic!"
Ushijima looked back at his phone in concern. Was it basic?
"Well, what did you put me as?"
Ushijima peered his head over to Tendou's phone.
"Ushi-kun, of course!"
Tendou shoved his phone in the other boy's face, but pulled it away before Ushijima could actually read it.
"Oh. Should I change what I have you as?"
Ushijima questioned. "I mean, I guess not. It's fine.."
Tendou rolled his eyes, shoving his phone and hands back in his pockets.
"Alright."
Ushijima put his phone back in his pocket as well.
"Well, see ya around Ushi-kun."
Tendou waved.
"Wait, our houses are still a little ways away, though?"
Ushijima stopped momentarily.
"Ah, I'm just gonna stop by the store real quick. Probably gonna get a snack or somethin'."
"Oh, okay. I'll see you tomorrow."
Tendou turned away with a bitter look on his face as the taller boy walked away. I still can't figure that one out...

Tendou put his phone on the charger and leaned back in his bed. A loud crash was heard from his living room followed by his dad shouting.
"Ugh."
He pierced his lips together, standing up and shutting his bedroom door. Plopping face first back onto his bed, he let out a little frustrated scream of his own. Why did his sister have to come home? This week of all times, too. The red head looked at his phone and thought about his texts with Ushijima.
He had figured if he could get a glimpse of Ushijima's home life then maybe it would be easer to analyze him, but that hadn't worked out. He let his mind wonder about why the boy had said no. Maybe Ushijima was going through something similar to Tendou? Maybe he understood the struggle? No, there's no way. No one could understand Tendou.
