Soda (part 22)

"Come on, Ushiwaka!"

Tendou ran ahead.

"We should have gotten bags. All of this stuff is hard to carry."

The boy rushed, trying to catch up with the red head.

"How are we gonna get all of this up the ladder?"

Tendou stopped once they reached the back of the building.

"I don't know. Carful not to shake up the soda."

Tendou hummed and started placing things in his pockets. He placed a candy bar in his mouth ad started climbing. Ushijima did the same and followed.

"Ah, there we go."

The red head adjusted himself on the roof and started removing things from his pockets. Ushijima climbed to the side that Tendou was on and joined him.

"Here!"

Tendou handed him his Pepsi and then took his own coke.

"Ready? Three... Two..."

Both of the boys held the cans away from themselves and prepared to open them.

"One!"

The click was heard from the soda's and then lots of fizzing as they started to overflow.

"Hah! So cool!"

The red head laughed as the fizzy sugar dripped off of their hands and onto the roof.

Ushijima smiled and the fussing soon mellowed. The shorter smiled brightly and then slurped the residue off of his hand. Ushijima did the same and then whipped his hand on his shorts.

"Ah, this summer is gonna be so fun."

Tendou said, sipping his drink.

"Right, Ushiwaka?"

He looked to his side.

"Ushiwaka?"

The taller boy looked at him.

"Um.. About that."

Tendou's face dropped.

"I have to go to California this summer."

Tendou sat up quickly.

"WHAT?! California? Cool! With all the beaches and stuff?"

He spilled a little of his drink with his excitement.

"Yeah, but I'm going to live with my mom."

He placed down his soda on the flat area next to him.

"Your mom? Wait, your coming back, right?!"

Ushijima took out the bag of meat buns they got.

"Yeah. Yeah I'm coming back at the end of summer."

The red head sighed in relief. He pulled out two buns and gave one to Tendou. He took a bite.

"Wai buh yourh momh is a bifh!"

Tendou shouted with his mouth full, Ushijima looking at him confused. He took a moment to swallow and then spoke again.

"Your mom is like, totally unstable. Right?"

Ushijima looked down at his own bun and hummed.

"She's left me alone for months at a time before. The first time when I was ten."

He paused to take a bite of his meat bun. Tendou had already scarfed down his.

"We both know she can't handle taking care of me yet she still tries to do these things. It's more for her to feel better about herself than for me."

He handed Tendou another meat bun. Between chews the red head humms to indicate he's still listening.

"Soumds messeh up."

Tendou attempts to say. Ushijima hums. Tendou takes a big gulp to swallow and then speaks.

"When will you be leaving?"

Ushijima looks at the sky.

"Tomorrow."

Tendou looks aswell.

"When are you coming back?"

He takes a moment to think.

"I'm not sure. Some time near the end of summer."

"Can you promise me two things?"

Tendou took out the pack of tic-tacs and opened it. Ushijima hummed.

"Promise you'll text me often. Maybe even call."

The olive-brown haired boy nodded.

"Of course. And the second thing?"

Tendou smiled.

"Bring me back a seagull's tail feather! The grossest, dirtiest one you can find!"

He laughed at the taller boys expression.

"I'm being serious!"

He laughed even more, starting to topple over.

"Oh shit-"

He accidentally knocked over his soda can. He watched as it rolled down the roof and onto the floor below, spilling the sugary drink as if went.

"Damn."

He crossed his arms, but loosened when he felt a bump on his arm. He looked to the side to see Ushijima offering his soda to him. The red head smiled and took it. Ushijima did as well. Both of the boys sat there, laughing until they couldn't breathe.

Those moments wouldn't be over yet.
