I walked in slowly through the corridor and when I entered one of the dorm rooms, I realised my mistake.
The walls were painted blue and everywhere was totally disgusting clothes strewn all about, and a putrid odour coming from what seemed to be the bathroom. I already imagined hostels would be way worse but this was too much for me.
What affirmed my fear was the male teacher walking towards me and laughing, are you new he asked, "yes sir" I answered, this is the boys hostel dear, let's get you out of here, they'll soon be done with their lunch.
As he was saying this, boys started running in and staring at me in shock, and their shock was followed by laughter.
I was mortified, just seconds into coming here,I was already labelled the girl who entered boys hostel,I almost cried, but I kept my face stoic as the teacher cleared a path for us and took me out of there.
He showed me the girls hostel, it was painted exactly the same as the boys hostel but they were opposite each other, I felt terrible and my brain kept on saying "that's what you get for resuming late".
I trudged quietly and slowly to the correct hostel and I heard laughter behind me,I was already disillusioned about the entire experience and tried to keep a straight face so as not to seem like a cry baby, but they came closer and offered to help me with my bags.
I was glad and they introduced themselves, one was Rachel and the other was Faith, they asked what class I was and we were pleasantly surprised to find out I was in the same class with them.
They took me to the matron, who assigned me to my dorm room.
The girls hostel was much better than the guys hostel,it was nearer and larger and thank God , it didn't smell like ammonia .
I was put in the second ss1 hostel and a bunch of girls helped me out with arranging my bed and my bunk space,I got a top bunk, which wasn't what I wanted but it was okay, they introduced themselves but I already forgot their names, but they seemed intent on hearing me talk about my awful experience.
They all laughed told jokes and as I settled in I realized there was nothing to be scared of.
After introductions, they told me the schedule, told me about the matrons and the ones to avoid and about the seniors, protects, basically everything I needed to know.
I found out the girl below me ,was a new girl too,she liked to be called Dera although her name was Chidera, we talked a bit and she was a lively welcoming person .
It was soon time for dinner, the bell was rang and everybody got down and started getting ready. We all went to the the the dining area which also doubled as the chapel.
There were ten people on each table,I was shown to mine and pleasantly surprised to find out my table was with Dera and Faith. My table was incomplete because apparently it was the late comers table.and we were the only mixed table to my chagrin.but the boys looked pretty decent so I didn't mind. After dinner I cleaned up and fell asleep because I was exhausted.
