I'm sorry in advance if this chapter is confusing I am literally going to overload you with information, you're welcome <3
Fallan
This guy had to be smoking something. Titan spinal fluid? The idea was ridiculous, and what angered me was that he thought I'd believe it.
"Don't be ridiculous." I scoffed.
"Fallan." My mother began in a low warning tone, but I sent her a glare.
"Please, you can't seriously believe this man? Do you even know him?" I spat. I wasn't sure what had got me so worked up, but this Pastor Nick had lit a very short fuse.
"Maybe if you gave the poor man a chance to explain himself then things would become quite a bit clearer Fallan." My father chided. It was the first time he'd spoken up since my arrival, and of course it was to scold me. I never liked to stand up to him though, so I shrank back into my seat and looked to Nick.
"Go on then." I mumbled. He shuffled uncomfortably and cleared my throat, and I felt a pang of regret. I'd become so damn cold recently and I hated it, but I just couldn't stop.
"The Pairves were once a powerful clan, amongst others. They were injected with spinal fluid from the Titans, and it allowed them access to the Titan's powers without changing the human's physical state. However it almost had an adverse effect, and instead of becoming mindless beings, they became incredibly intelligent and were granted the knowledge of their ancestors, along with superhuman healing abilities."
I couldn't help my jaw from tensing in annoyance. Either this was a clever little lie or an elaborate practical joke. Sure, I'd always been smart - but the knowledge of my ancestors? And healing abilities? I just had an efficient immune system.
"I hate to break it to you," I said through gritted teeth, "But I certainly do not possess the knowledge of my ancestors, and my healing isn't superhuman."
Nick chuckled again, this time it was darkly.
What's funny, asshole?
"Oh I'm aware of this. It's because your blood is..." He paused for a moment, as if looking for the correct word to use. "Impure."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
He looked almost uneasy at the question, which began to set me on edge.
"Alice was not born into the Pairve bloodline. Only Jasper was. It seems that within the Pairve clan, descendants were forced to mate with relatives to keep the bloodline pure, and maintain the abilities to their maximum capability."
Disgust began to creep into my bones and my face twisted into a sneer.
"Jasper turned against the Clan and refused to mate with a relative, and so was exiled from the family. He was forced into the Underground, where he met Alice, and then they had you. Fallan, you are only half Pairve, and therefore... Impure."
I clasped onto the arms of the chair with white knuckles, anger igniting inside of me.
"You've got a lot of nerve coming in here and telling me that I'm some kind of incestual, mutated freak, and now you're saying I'm impure like some mutt-" I began to shout.
"Do you know why your brother named you Fallan?" My Father interrupted calmly, looking to me with disdain.
What an odd thing to say.
I shook my head.
"Fallan... Sounds an awful lot like fallen don't you think. He said when he found you, you were like his fallen angel. I put that down to the ramblings of a lonely child, as I'm starting to think you're quite the opposite - a devil perhaps. He'd be turning in his grave if he knew what an ungrateful wretch you turned out to be."
Ouch.
I hung my head as tears began to blur my vision. Would Edward really be disappointed in the woman I'd become? I did it all for him - surely he'd be proud of me? I couldn't help it that my words sometimes sounded harsh, or that I couldn't control my anger. This was all because I had to follow his dream.
"You're wrong."
"Speak up, Dear." My father taunted, his voice sickeningly sweet.
"You're wrong." I spoke louder, looking to him with a burning fury. "Edward would be proud of me. I risk my life to save humanity while all you do is sit in your mansion and watch the world through rose tinted glasses. I'm sorry that your real son died, and all you were left with was the street urchin he begged you to take in, but I cannot change that, and it wasn't my fault!"
"Actually," Nick began and I glared at him, watching as he shrank back momentarily.
"What?" I growled.
"I don't mean to make matters worse, but it seems the Pairve's had made quite a few enemies, and the family itself wasn't too keen on having an impure descendant running around. Edward Reid was only murdered because he was thought to be the illegitimate Pairve. For the past few years, we've been trying to figure out who was after you."
I froze and felt my blood turn cold.
"Well Fallan," My mother spat. "Are you sure he's oh so proud of you now?"
"No." I moaned, letting my head fall into my hands. "No, no, no."
The tears welled back once more and began to fall, leaving hot trails that ran down my cheeks. I wrapped my arms around myself and attempted to conceal my sobs as pain wracked its way through my body and clasped at my heart with an icy grip. All this time I'd spent blaming others for my brother's death, even blaming him at one point, when truly...I was the only reason Edward Reid was dead.
