“So, should I show you around a little?” Jack asked me.

“Sure,” I said.

He led me into a hallway off of the main room. In the hallway there were four doors. The first two were the kitchen and bathroom. The last two were bedrooms. He showed me all of them, then we headed back into the kitchen.

“Well, ya hungry?” Jack asked.

I nodded, “Yeah.”

He looked in the fridge, then closed it. Then he looked in the cupboards, then closed them too.

“Um….we got no real food for you,” he pulled a mason jar out of the fridge, “Just these,” the mason jar had a kidney in it.

“Well, we got two options, since we can’t go back into town,” Jack mumbled

“So you’re saying, either I don’t eat, or I eat that,” I pointed at the jar. Jack nodded. I groaned. We both stared at the jar for what seemed like forever.

“Well, it can’t be that bad, can it?” I asked wearily. He shrugged. I held out my hands and he tossed the jar to me. I caught it and put it on the table.

We both sat down and stared at the jar some more. I finally got up the nerve to open the jar. It smelled like blood, it smelled....good? I looked up at Jack, he just stared at the kidney.

I stuck two fingers into the jar and picked up the kidney. I eyeballed it for a second. Jack seemed worried, but I wasn’t sure why.

I put it up to my mouth, and took a tiny bite of it. It actually tasted pretty good, for a kidney.

“Actually, not that bad,” I told him. I took another bite, it tasted like the blood from the house, sweet but bitter at the same time.

“Ya think you can eat those? I mean, if so, I’ll have enough food for both of us for a while,” Jack said.

“Yeah, I can eat these,” I replied.
