Chapter 13

Ours

The next morning i woke with a start. The cold thing. The little thing that Ross had given me before i took off. The last i remembered of it, i had stuck it in my suitcase....

I ran to my suitcase and turned it inside out. I couldn't find whatever it was.

Then i opened the small front pocket, and a little locket fell out. It was a small metal heart on a chain with a cursive R engraved on the front. I clicked it open and almost dropped it in surprise. I bit my hand to keep myself from screaming. Somehow Ross had managed to put 3D photos into the locket so that when you turned it so, it showed me a video.

I flicked the locket a couple of times before i got it. the video was over within seconds.

I watched it again. It was a short clip of Ross smiling, laughing, then leaning in to kiss me, his hand on my cheek. At the end there was "I love you" written in tiny print.

I spent the morning watching my locket over and over again. Over and over. I smiled and remembered the feeling of Ross's lips pressed against mine. What i would do to feel them again... Even to just be with him. A tear slip down my nose and hit the hardwood floor.

Later that day i accompanied Carly and tommy to go find "Pets", as tommy called them. In reality, we were actually buying animals for the land, when i had been thinking of puppies and kittens.

"A couple cows, chickens," tommy was telling us all the things we were getting; i was only half listening. We sat in booths to wait for the auctions to start. After about ten minutes the animals started coming out. First a bull. Tommy refused to put his paddle up. A donkey. No.

So many animals went through that i lost track. Then a beautiful spotted female cow waddled out. Tommy's paddle shot in the air, accompanied by at least five others. Tommy pushed his up again. Again. The man in the corner with the mic was talking so quickly that all i heard was, "Headaheadkalandhwlaoqpqla kdhanaiosndbslanabs! Oh! Alapsbwialqhdnsialakandowi-- SOLD! To the man in the orange shirt!" i looked at tommy and noticed for the first time that he had a neon orange shirt on. He smirked at the men who had been competing with him for the cow. I rolled my eyes.

Tommy got a bucket of twenty chicks that the seller promised were mostly hens, and another cow. Now we were just watching the rest of the auction for fun. "I don't think they wanted anything else... That's good for now. Worse casenario we have to come back to this lovely place, right Carly? Jord?" he gestured around us at the hot, muddy, poo covered arena. Carly and i laughed and then focused our attention on the auction.

The man walked out with two foals -- one was pure white and the other was a perfect, shiny black. Carly and i gasped.

Tommy saw our reaction and his eyes lit up. He shot up his paddle; but this time there was only one other bid against him. When the fast-talking man asked for a higher bid, Tommy's paddle shot up but the other man kept his down.

We had gotten the foals.

I slapped Tommy's arm. "What did you do that for?! I thought you said we didn't need any other animals!" but i was grinning.

Tommy laughed and just smiled at me and Carly.

"c'mon, let's go get our new.. Pets." he winked and we ran together to the pens where all the animals were.

We quickly found ours and paid for them, then tommy loaded the chicks into the front seat of his truck and the cows into the horse-holder thing a ma bobby that was atatched to the back.

Carly and i were going gaga over the foals. Tommy left us to play with them in their pen, while he went to go talk to someone about them.

"Oh Jordan, aren't they beautiful? Especially the white one! The white one's magnificent!" Carly patted the white foal's head timidly.

I smiled but said quietly, "Actually, i think this one's prettier." i stroked the black one's back.

"Well..." Carly started, turning towards me. "Tommy got them for us, right? What of you got the black one and i got the white one?"

I jumped. "Yes!" i screamed. People walking by gave me funny looks, so i lowered my voice. "If that's ok with you, that is."

"Oh yes Jord! It's PERFECT!"

Seconds later tommy came back. "So, i figured out why no one wanted them! Apparently one's a boy and the other's a girl, but they're not related so when they're older nothing'll stop em from... Mating."

"that means..." started Carly.

"Babies!!" we shouted together.

Tommy loaded them into the area where the cows were and the three of us hopped into the car. All three of us had giant grins on our faces.

When we got back home, everyone else was out, so the three of us settled all of the new animals into their homes. There was a little red barn that opened up into a big field, and we put the cows and foals in there.

Carly and i piled their plastic bowls high with hay and pellets, then filled all of their water containers (trash cans) to the rim.

We spent at least half an hour sitting in our horses's stalls petting them. I could hear Carly talking to hers through the wall that separated us, and thought about talking to my horse. I decided not to -- i just didn't have anything interesting enough to Bother my horse with. I continued stroking it, when i realized that we didn't know which foal was the boy and which was the girl. I looked under mine and immediately discovered that mine was the boy.

Carly and i spent the rest of the evening thinking of names for our horses -- for the first time since we'd been in Hawaii, i actually felt happy.
