Your future depends on your imagination
Soyoung sat upright, her plain white shirt standing contrast against the black leather seat she pressed her back against, one hand raised with gentle fingers curled around the steering wheel.
She glanced to her side, at Hendery, "Seatbelt" She reminded and the boy raised a brow, staring at her for a few seconds dubiously.
"Don't tell me we're gonna end up crashing" He remarked but nevertheless strapped the seatbelt around his torso making Soyoung gain a small smile.
"Safety it is" She replied with a slight nod before turning ahead to face her front, "Also, don't worry, I drive good enough" She responded with a quick smile.
"And that's for me to decide" He stated with a raised finger pointing at himself, tone nothing close to stern, "Sure, go ahead" She gave a nod in agreement before turning to face her front.
Soyoung revved the engine feeling the car roar to life under her touch and promptly, her feet lowered onto the accelerator and the car propelled, speeding at a steady pace.
"So, where are we heading?" She asked keeping her gaze fixated ahead as she effortlessly glided past numerous cars on the street. Hendery glimpsed at her with a smile lingering on his lips, "Wherever you take me" .
His reply made her furrow her brows in bewilderment, wondering if this was his method of conversing with absolute strangers but soon shrugged it off, focusing on the road instead.
"Didn't actually expect you to take me on out a ride" Hendery began, propping his hand against the door handle with eyes wandering around the surroundings.
"Well, I usually don't," She answered while steering the wheel to round the corner as a new one unveiled itself in front, "Mostly strangers at that" She added, giving the rear-view mirror a quick glimpse before settling her gaze onto the road.
"Then I'll consider myself lucky" Hendery mumbled with a light airy chuckle slipping his lips, giving the girl a quick glance.
The two suddenly fell into stillness after those words, just the sound of the car purring through the alleys infiltrating through the air as she drove.
"What about the so-called talk we were suppose to have?" Soyoung began, her soft voice piercing through the silence gaining his attention.
"We can," Hendery stated, leaning his elbow on his thigh and tucking his chin into his unclenched palm.
"I must say I'm impressed at your driving"
"Thanks" She nodded, lips pursing together, awaiting for him to proceed."Ever been to a race before?" Hendery asked with a quirked brow, "No, last night was my very first" She replied with a small nod.
"And how was the little experience?"
"Great. It's exhilarating to watch a race- especially when you've got good racers who make you feel like you are part of the race yourself. Just great." She smiled, every moment from the previous night still persisting in her mind.Hendery hummed, "I see you like it" He mumbled more to himself with an acknowledging nod.
"You wanna join in?" He asked, tone stern, "What?" Soyoung uttered out, astonished.
"Race, Soyoung" He confirmed, "Don't you want to be a part of it- the cars, the races, the underworld?" Hendery asked, fingers tracing over the line of the dashboard with his eyes still persisting on the girl.
Soyoung's grasp on the wheel stiffened, jaw clenched tight as her feet dropped further on the throttle- mind racing with the numerous emerging thoughts.
Admittedly, the most part of her was excited to join in the racers club but there was flickering anxiety inside of her, uncertain of whether she was ready to step into the underworld.
"You want to recruit me in?" She asked out cautiously, body tensing at her own words.
Last night was a mere taste of what her future could unfold into and she couldn't stop how she grew more irresistible, every ounce of her yearning to accept.
"Yes. I know you want to as well, Choi. Just say it" Hendery stated with a quick nod, anticipating her response.
"There's everything you can ask for- the adrenaline, thrill and freedom. What more do you want?"
Soyoung didn't know how to reply, lips pressed in a thin line as she pondered over his words that endlessly rang in her mind.Freedom.
That was something she ultimately craved for- the past three years of her life being a ceaseless circle of college, her mother and the garage. Taking the responsibility of financially sustaining her family and the business, simultaneously, weighed her down.
But now, Hendery's words felt like an open invitation, enticing her with hope and expectations- an escape from the reality that enervated her.
Go for it. The voice in the back of her mind insisted. Just do it.
Soyoung instinctively pushed her feet down onto the brake pad, bringing the car to a halt with a deep exhale under her breath.
Her eyes flickered over to Hendery who had a small smile dancing on his lips, almost like he could see through her thoughts and reaching out to a conclusion, she voiced out her decision.
"I'm up for it, Hendery"
And now we get to the actual plot ;)
