My Darkest Secret

Flashback 1- (mini)

So, as promised here is a short chapter. I decided that every once in a while I'll publish these 'flashback' chapters that will be slightly shorter that normal, but be about Maya's past. This particular one is set when Maya and Jess lived together the first time, and a day after Maya tells him her secret. Maya is 13 and Jess is 14.

Maya's POV

The moon had risen a few hours ago, and although all I wanted to do was sleep, I couldn't. I couldn't for two reasons: 1 being that I knew the second I closed my eyes, I would be trapped in another night terror; and 2, I couldn't stop thinking about what I had told Jess.

I told him my secret, expecting him to run screaming, or shout names at me. But he didn't, all he did is stand there, mouth wide open, as I showed him the true colour of my eyes.

He didn't say anything either, just looked at me before going to bed. This morning, he acted like nothing happened at all.

It was weird, I didn't know what to expect, I thought he might at least be angry. But he just acted as though nothing had happened.

'Maya, can we go to the park? We haven't shifted in ages. Please?' Cora begged,

'sure, I don't see why not.' I happily obliged.

I got out of bed slowly, careful not to wake Jess as he was half off the bed, his hands under his pillow -we could only afford one bed after all. I opened the cupboard and pulled out a simple, light blue top, and some black joggers,

'M, It looks really cold out, bring a hoodie.' Cora suggest, agreeing with her, I grabbed a random hoodie and climbed out the apartment window before jumping into the pavement.

I reached the fence that surrounded the small nature park, carefully checking for cameras or other people when I noticed Jess' scent. I brushed it off though, thinking It was just because I had worn his hoodie.

Jumping nimbly over the fence, I walked towards a tree before stripping down and folding my clothes in a neat pile. I closed my eyes and shifted, feeling as every bone in my body snapped and moved around.

When I opened my eyes again, I was looking apon my midnight black paws. I began to trot of deeper into the park, loving how the grass brushed against my fur. In my wolf form, I was about the same size as a smaller husky. It was probably because of how small I am in human form.

I sped up, and began dodging between the trees. Then, I heard a familiar scent coming from somewhere ahead of me.

'we should go and finding it.' Cora suggested, agreeing, I sped up and found a silhouette standing behind a tree. I let out a small growl at the figure, making them turn around before my purple eyes met hazel as Jess turned to look at me, a small gasp escaping his mouth.

"Maya?" He asked, his mouth curved into a smile of... awe?

I gave a wolfy grin and let out a small yip. Before heading back in the direction I came, signaling for him to follow.

My heart thumped relentlessly in my chest, how would he react? Would he be angry? Or scared? Or would he just walk off?

'Maya, if he was going to walk away then I think he would have already. Don't worry M, it'll be great. Then I want to meet him, or would that freak him out too much? Damn it now I'm nervous... ' Cora rambled on,

'oh Cora, have I ever told you how  awesome you are? Cause you really are' I reassured her,

'well M, I don't think there would be any harm in telling me more.' She teased.

To say I was glad that Cora was no longer nervous was a huge relief was an understatement. Her being calm made me calm, and I needed calm.

Reaching the tree that I had kept my clothes behind, I signaled for Jess to stop before going behind the tree.

Focusing on my human form, I began shifting back, feeling each bone break and move around again. The first time I shifted, the pain was excruciating and I passed out, but that was more to do with the fact I was badly malnourished. Now the pain felt like more of a paper cut.

I slipped on my oversized hoodie, before coming out from behind the tree,

"Hi Jess?" I said softly, my words coming out as more of a question,

"Maya?" He asked, I simply nodded before he engulfed me in a hug.
