"have you wrapped ethans presents?" i ask my dad as he looks at the tv.

"i don't know where they are, it was your moms job." he turns to smile at me but i roll my eyes, why would he give her a job.

i walk outside and shade my eyes from the bright sun. my mum was sunbathing and i couldn't wait to join her.

"mum have you wrapped ethan's presents and got candles for the cake?" i ask her.

"he doesn't want a cake." she says, clearly hungover.

"he's a kid he obviously wants a cake." i say.

"he said he didn't want a cake, elle." she repeats herself. "lay down with me, it's hot and nice."

"i'm fully dressed." i laugh as she tries to pull my top down.

"take ya clothes off baby!" she tugs on my top as we giggle but i soon stop.

"he would've only said that because he thinks we don't have enough money." i explain.

"we don't." she states.

"fine, are the presents wrapped?" i ask.

"shit, i forgot. i forgot to put the money aside for it. it's come around so quickly." she groans.

"his birthday is tomorrow!" i shout in disbelief.

"he doesn't like toys anyway he's always on that xbox." she shoos me away and i storm off in anger.

i pick up the phone and pray the boy answers.

"hi, wanna go shopping? i need some shoes for my brother, it's his birthday tomorrow." i explain, grateful that i had been payed this week for tutoring.

"okay see you soon!" i say and pick up ethans shoe from near the front door to remember the size.

after ten minutes i hear his car pull up outside and run out the door.

"happy saturday!" kairi says cheerfully.

"i'm so glad you weren't busy, with the boys or something." i smile, sitting in the passenger seat.

"nah, alejandro is still asleep and mattia is with vic." he explains and i nod.

"can i ask you something? from like an outsiders point of view." kairi starts the journey to the mall.

"go ahead." i reply.

"what do you think about that couple?" he asks.

"i don't really think it's my place to say, i've only been here for like two weeks." i shrug.

"they're just like friends right, aren't they not in love?" he suggests.

"what?" i say, confused.

"mattia and vic are bestfriends, we've all always been close. but mattia is just her boyfriend for sex and she is just his girlfriend so she can tell people she has a boyfriend." kairi rambles.

"i honestly don't understand." i shake my head.

"you're worse than ale! we had this argument last night because it's coming up their one month anniversary. basically, i think they don't love each like that, just conveniently use each other but ale thinks i wouldn't know cause i haven't ever loved a girl."

"i thought they had been together way longer than a month!" i said shocked.

"they should break up before it hits a month, right? when it gets serious?" he asks.

"kairi, you need to chill. it's their life." i ruffle his hair and we arrive at the mall.

"happy birthday ethan!" i yell, entering his room to wake him up.

he yawns and smiles at me, his eyes light up as he spots the box i'm holding. my heart warms as he jumps out of the bed to grab it.

"i love them, elle. these are sick!" he opens the box and hugs me before going to grab his phone and take a picture of the sneakers. i love seeing him happy- even if it does mean i have to step in and play the mother role sometimes.

"it's okay little bro, dads downstairs making you a big breakfast too. once you've ate get a damn shower, stinky." i say and he puts his middle finger up at me so i put him in a headlock.

"lose the attitude or i won't take you out for ice cream later." i say and he taps out.

"can i bring a friend?" he asks with hope in his eyes.

"you'll have to see if dad will pick your friend up cause he's the one giving us a ride but sure." i smile and we head to the kitchen.

"happy birthday son!" dad cheers once he sees ethan.

"thanks dad." he smiles and we sit at the table.

"happy birthday baby boy." mum sneaks up behind him and covers his eyes before placing an open amazon box infront of him. she uncovers his eyes and he looks inside.

"oh my god, he's my favourite youtuber! thanks mum, thanks dad!" he cheers picking up the brightly coloured phone case with excitement.

he runs upstairs to get his phone and dad places the food out infront of us.

"i thought-" i say.

"he sent me the link a week ago, i must've ordered it and forgot. it arrived yesterday whilst you were out." she kisses my head and sits down with dad.

ethan returns and we start eating.

"are you ready?" i pound on his bedroom door.

"i was waiting for you!" ethan says as he runs down the stairs to meet my dad.

i follow behind him as we leave the house.

"are we getting your friend on the way?" i ask when we approach the car.

"gianluca is getting a ride from his brother." ethan says and jumps in the front seat as my face drops in shock.
