"I told Michael that I used to have a crush on you."
"I'm totally over it."
"Why does he do the things he does for Michael? I just don't get it. What is he getting out of that relationship?"
"I'm the one who complained about you."
"I can't."
That was the worst one.
Jim looked up at the building that he'd been calling his workplace for years now. It felt strange to be leaving, especially for the last time. As much as he moaned about working there and the people he worked with, he actually quite enjoyed it. Or maybe he only enjoyed one thing about it.
No, that was unfair. Michael, even if he was kooky and strange, was a great boss, and Jim felt a sudden pang of sadness run through him which he had not been expecting. Then there was Dwight, who was even weirder than his infamous boss, but was also fun to prank, and was actually quite nice; or maybe that was just when he was concussed. Everyone else more or less blended into the background for him, though Jim knew he'd also miss people like Kevin and Kelly. Then again, it surely wasn't goodbye forever for those people, he'd still talk to them if he could help it.
Then there was her.
He wasn't going to talk to her if he could help it. It would hurt too much. Far too much.
Jim rubbed his index and middle finger along his lips slowly, as he could still feel Pam's soft lips against his.
Tonight had been a mistake, but he couldn't change it now. There was no way of altering what had been said. And now he couldn't possibly stay here, for both of their sakes. Jim reached into his pocket and pulled out his car keys and began a slow descent to his car, as slow as he could possibly go.
It hadn't quite sunk in until now, when he could feel the bitingly hard metallic part of the keys in his hand, that he was leaving for good. He wasn't going to see a lot of these people again; well, the ones he wasn't going to keep in touch with. Jim suddenly felt hollow inside for some reason.
'This...this is what I'm meant to be doing, right? I just want to fix things. For us. For me.'
The paper salesman glanced back up at the building once more- and temporarily stopped when he saw Pam in the window, observing him. He felt his heart skip millions of beats.
'She has no way of knowing. Where I'm going, or why I'm doing it. This is for you, Pam. For us. I'm going to fix things. Things are finally going to be okay, I promise. Have a nice life. One without me. You don't have to think about all those times anymore, as I've done, because it's okay now. I've fixed things.'
He opened his car using the button on his car keys.
'Delusion.' Another voice in his head said. 'You don't actually think that, you're just trying to convince yourself.'
Jim ignored this thought. He shot Pam one last look, then kept walking to his car, only quicker now. Things were finally going to be okay, Jim told himself; though deep down he knew this was all a cover up, and really, he had no idea just how things would work out.
