"Wait, Dad, you knew him? Personally?" Remy asked, curiosity alight on his face as his father wrapped his ankle with some leftover bandages they had. Virgil lifted his head to look Remy in the eyes, his purple ones filled with sadness.
"I knew all of them," He murmured, bowing his head once more to continue wrapping Remy's sprained ankle. "At least, I thought I did. Once. A long, long time ago." Virgil continued, his voice filled with despair that 5-year-old Remy couldn't comprehend.
"What were they like?" Remy asked, his bubbly voice carrying over the desolate ruins surrounding the pair. Virgil finished wrapping his ankle and leaned back, taking in his son's features. Reddish-brown hair, brown eyes, tan skin... He looks just like you, my love. Virgil thought, memories rushing back.
Sunlight streamed through the corridor, but Virgil was hidden in the shadows. He took in these five, who had braved the treacherous forest surrounding his tower all to ask him to help save the world. A ridiculous notion, indeed.
"Please, sir! We wouldn't be here if it wasn't serious!" The Prince begged, running a stressed hand through his curly, auburn locks. Virgil smiled grimly, stepping out of the shadows and holding up a hand to stop them from speaking. He looked over the five, a most unusual group. A common baker with sandy-blonde locks, who had a light blue blouse and dark brown trousers on, along with black, wire-rimmed glasses. An elf, who had long black hair and seemed rather attached to the baker, who was wearing a long, dark blue cape that covered most of his clothing. A dark-brown-haired snake hybrid, who had scales running down the right side of his body and only spoke in lies. A shifter, assigned to guard the Prince, who had black hair with a grey streak through it and who acted insanely. Well, more insanely than the other four. And, finally, a human Prince, who had brown eyes and tan skin, who had needed Virgil's help so badly he'd run away from the comfort and safety of his home.
"I know that," Virgil snapped, debating on his answer. He knew that the Dark Overlord's army drew ever closer to completing their goal, ever closer to destroying the world and all the life it held. "Fine. But you owe me, Princey." He said, sighing deeply. The Prince beamed at him and the baker immediately squeezed Virgil into a hug, eliciting a surprised look from the mage. And so, five had become six, a dark-haired, pale mage joining forces with the oddest array of people he'd ever seen.
Virgil snapped himself out of his thoughts, some crumpled copy of a smile crossing his face as he remembered his son's question. "They were going to save the world." He said, his voice breaking. And around them, the world burned.
