Today is the day of the practice game against Johzenji. Today I get to see Terushima.
"Are you so excited, little lovebird?" Mya asks me as we take down the net. I guess I should say as she takes down the net; I, on the other hand, am just standing near the net to make it look like I'm doing something helpful so Coach doesn't yell at me.
"I'm so stoked, but I don't like the idea of cheering for both teams on the court." I tell her. My hands reach into my brown hair, untying my loose bun so my heat-influenced curls fall down my shoulders.
"Don't be worried about that. It'll be fun!" She tells me. I flip my head upside down and rake my fingers through my hair, trying to make it look as good as possible. "I'm excited to meet him." She nudges my shoulder before she grabs the cart, pushing the heavy metal rack towards the storage room.
She's right. It will be.
"Hey, Maihua, Mya!" A voice asks from the locker room door. Our heads turn, eyes landing on a second-year named Karina. "Are you guys going to the practice game? I know only a couple of people can spectate since it's not a real game, but I figured you guys were one of them because of Daichi. Do you mind if I sit with you? I was supposed to go with Pyper but she just bailed because she has a scholarship essay to work on." She looks at us expectantly, obviously hoping for a positive answer. She almost looks intimidated to ask us. I smile to ease her hesitation and nod without asking Mya for permission.
"Yeah, for sure!" I tell her. She brushes her strawberry blonde hair behind her ear and smiles back at me. We decide to leave our backpacks in the locker room so we don't have to sit with them in the stands at the boys' gym. I pull my phone out and see that we have nearly thirty minutes until the game starts. That's not enough time to get food. "I'm sure we will be going to eat after if you want to come to that too!"
She gushes, "Thank you! That's so sweet of you to invite me"
"It's no problem!"
"The more the merrier honestly." Mya adds as we head towards the gym doors. I feel a rush of excitement enter my body as we pass through the doors of the boys' gym. My eyes immediately scan the floor for my boyfriend. Mya leads us towards the stairs to watch the game from the upper-level bleachers surrounding the court. I spot Daichi first as he warms up with Sugawara. I smile and let my eyes wander some more, not spotting the rival team anywhere.
Karina speaks my thoughts into existence. "Where's Johzenji?" We find open seats in the front row at about half-court. The gym is nearly empty save for like twenty students who had nothing better to do on a Friday evening than to accept an invitation to this practice game. My eyes look at our team again, looking for my... hopefully soon-to-be friends. My eyes fall on Tadashi who is standing near the end of the bench before moving to Tsuki who is taping his slender fingers. A loud yell is heard and my eyes move to none other than Hinata who is passing with Nishanoya, causing me to furrow my eyebrows. I figured he would be practicing with his roommate. Unintentionally, my curious eyes look for the absent setter.
"We are a little early," I tell her after realizing I've kept her waiting too long for an answer. "They might still be in the locker room-"
"There they are!" Mya notices, making my head whip to where her eyes are directed. I spot their yellow jerseys drifting into the main arena of the gym. Again, my eyes survey the boys walking onto the court, hoping to spot the one who frequents my mind. His blonde hair is nearly slicked back as usual as he talks to one of his teammates.
"There's Terushima! He's number 1." I explain. I turn to Karina. "He's my boyfriend."
"Oh wow! He's so cute! How did you meet?" She asks. My eyes stare at him, glancing at her every now and then as I tell her the quick version of Teru and my relationship.
My heart flutters as his eyes look to the stands in an attempt to spot me. I decide to make it easier for him and stand up, leaning against the railing. My hands cup my mouth, deciding to call for his attention.
"Terushima!" I yell loudly, but not loudly enough to bring sufficient attention to me from unwanted listeners.
His head snaps towards my direction and I see a smile cross his face as his brown eyes land on my deep green ones. I smile, waving my hand in the air. He waves back to me.
"He's hot!" Mya says shamelessly. I nod, a light blush on my cheeks.
I agree, "Tell me about it."
The three of us talk amongst ourselves about the players. The conversation, given that Mya is present and ever so curious, eventually included picking the hottest ones on our team.
"Hey, Karina. Which boy do you think is the hottest?" Mya asks her. "From each team." She adds quickly to make the conversation just a little more spicy before our new second-year friend can answer the first part. I look over at her for a moment, seeing a light blush cross her cheeks.
"Well, I guess if I had to choose," she begins coyly. "Number 11 from our team and number 4 from the other." My eyes land on Tsukishima and I almost laugh.
My mouth opens to offer insight on the player of her choice, "Number 11? That's Tsukishima. I'm friends with his best friend and he's nothing short of an asshole from what I've experienced." I let my eyes stay on the tall blonde and realize that I agree with her. He is pretty hot.
Although I wouldn't say he's my top choice.
Mya decides to let us know what her mind is reeling, "My boy is number 3." She continues, "When Maihua moved in, I met her brother and his friends and I immediately fell in love with him. He's so shy and tall. His name is Asahi." Mya subtly points at the ace of our team. "I've had a crush on him for like a month now and I'll die if we don't end up getting married."
Karina laughs at this and tells Mya that he looks super intimidating, causing Mya to go off on a tangent about how flustered he was when she talked to him on move-in day.
My gaze falls back on our team. I may have a boyfriend, but that doesn't mean I can't answer the question. My eyes pass from player to player, taking in all of their appearances. As I look, I remember that I still haven't spotted Kageyama.
"Who do you think it is?" Karina asks me. "If you want to of course, I know you have a boyfriend."
"Let me think," I say, although already knowing deep down who I would choose. If I answer too quickly though, it may seem like I've thought about the answer, which I definitely have not. Okay, maybe I have but still.
Finally, my eyes land on him.
The black-haired setter has his back turned to us as he sets against the opposite wall. I watch his back as he expertly throws the ball into the same spot over and over again. His hair is as it usually is: straight, textured, and nearly perfectly kept. His back contracts with every toss and his jersey fits him so perfectly it's almost as if it was specifically tailored to fit his muscular yet lanky body. I let out a breath that I didn't realize I was holding.
There's my answer.
