"Just don't let Daichi see or I swear I'm done giving you special treatment," Suga whispers to me as we stand near the cooler filled with various alcoholic beverages meant mostly for the older members of the team. "Plus Daichi will beat my ass if he sees that I've snuck two drinks for you."
"I would never snitch on you, Suga. You know you're my favorite," I whisper back obnoxiously. "Plus I think Hinata and Tadashi have both had more than me anyway so I doubt Daichi will even notice."
Sugawara runs his hand through my hair, ruffling it in adoration. "You're such a little troublemaker, Hua."
"Well one of the Sawamura siblings has to be," I twist open the top of the Mike's Hard Lemonade and take a swig to prove my statement. Suga smirks at me drunkenly and pulls me in to give me a kiss on the hair. I smile.
Our cute friend moment is interrupted by a loud voice erupting throughout the pavilion, "Maihua will you be my partner in beer pong? I want to crush Tsuki and Tadashi into the ground and Tanaka is too drunk to play again." Nishanoya calls. Suga lets go of me and allows me to make my way over to the short boy. He tries to high-five me but severely misses due to the fog in his brain caused by the numerous alcoholic beverages he had consumed in the last two hours.
"Are you sure you're even good to play?" I ask, placing my hand on his shoulder.
A pout crosses his lips. He turns away from me and pokes his chin up in the air childishly. "I'm disappointed that you would even doubt me for a second. I am completely capable of meddling in a simple game of pong."
"I'll believe it when I see it." I nudge the boy. He rolls his pretty eyes before leading me over to where we are about to kick some ass at a drinking game.
"Noya I think you have a better chance of winning with black-out Tanaka," Tsuki's condescending voice rings as he spots me as Nishanoya's new partner.
My eyes automatically roll back in my head at the blonde's constant degradation towards me, "Hey, Tsuki, shut the fuck up." I tell him without hesitation. His mouth turns into an amused smirk as it did the last time I spoke those words to him.
"It's so refreshing to see you two together," Tadashi mumbles sarcastically as he waves his Miller Lite bottle dramatically.
The game commences soon after. While we play I manage to get a feel for what everyone else is doing around camp. Hinata, Kenma, Kuroo, and the two Fukurodani boys are piled around the bonfire. I can tell that Bokuto is clearly intoxicated by the way Akaashi is holding his marshmallow roasting stick for him. Bokuto is arguing with Kuroo about something, occasionally earning an eye roll from Akaashi who seems to be more sober than that of his two friends. Kenma has his Nintendo Switch between his fingers, pressing buttons and occasionally answering questions that Hinata asks over his shoulder. The blonde boy has a light blush on his cheeks which could be explained by either the proximity to the ginger or the alcohol in his system.
Daichi and Asahi are nowhere to be seen which I find myself grateful for because I don't have to worry about sipping the sugary drink every time Tsuki or Tadashi lands a ping pong ball into one of the cups. Tanaka has managed to sit himself in one of the viewing chairs near the table, looking as if he could throw up at any given moment. A smile ghosts over my lips at the enjoyment that seems to be prevalent in everyone's character.
Well, almost everyone.
My eyes land on Kageyama who sits in one of the lawn chairs near the fire, his attention focused inattentively on his phone. For some reason, the phantom of happiness on my lips disappears at the sight of him.
"Doubt me again, bitch!" Nishanoya interrupts my thoughts as he sinks the final cup. I will admit, he did carry the game for me but that didn't stop trash talk from escaping my mouth towards the two boys across the table.
Tsukishima rolls his eyes as he often does before replying. "Keep your voice down. There are other people here too, you know."
"No witty reply?" I ask in shock. The blonde looks at me disinterestedly. "I'll give you a minute to come up with something, Tsuki. I know you're dying to say something rude." I look down at my wrist as if a watch rests there. When my eyes land back on the attractive blonde, his eyes are already rolling back again.
"You're one to talk. Nishanoya carried your ass that game." Tsuki lays out. "Don't talk big when you didn't even do shit."
My teeth have to sink into my bottom lip to stop myself from smiling. Tsukishima looks confused at my reaction. "Tsuki you are so funny."
His eyebrows furrow. "Thanks. I guess.""
"Maihua, do you want to go make s'mores with us?" Tadashi asks as he throws his empty Miller Lite bottle into one of the camp's designated trash cans. "Tsuki makes them really good!" The three of us head over to the group of guys enjoying the evening near the warmth of the bonfire, attempting to join and fill our stomachs with sugary sandwiches.
When Kuroo notices my arrival, his eyes light up. Tadashi and Tsukishima seat themselves in two of the lawn chairs adjacent to the boys on the bench, causing me to head towards the only open lawn chair next to Tadashi.
"Baby Daichi, come here," Kuroo coos, holding his hands out and pinching his fingers together as if he were a child in desire of being held. Instead of arguing, I comply and go over to stand in front of my brother's friend.
I yelp out in surprise as he pulls me onto his lap. His hands circle my waist limply and without motive. He smiles drunkenly at me and turns to Tsukishima, whom he had taken a slight interest in earlier in the day. "Hey, Tsukibadada. Can you make Maihua a s'more?"
"I was planning on it but now that you ask, no."
Kuroo looks at me in disbelief, still not used to the blonde boy's saltiness. "Why is he so mean to me?"
"At least it's not me this time," I tease. The blonde boy's mouth shadows a smirk, mentally thinking of a comeback I'm sure but sparing me the pain of having to listen to his insult.
The next half hour is filled with drunken, happy conversation. Eventually, my ass gets sore from sitting on Kuroo's lap so I move my body to the open lawn chair next to Tadashi. As Bokuto drawls on about a new quick attack he and Akaashi are practicing, my eyes selfishly gaze at the setter who seems even more quiet than usual. Kageyama stares into the fire absentmindedly, his blue eyes reflecting the red flames. My gaze lingers longer than I intend it to as I study his beautiful face.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm sure Kageyama feels slightly out of place and lonely due to his best friend's attention being occupied by that of Kenma Kozume.
"Maihua, can you go get me another drink?" Kuroo asks, breaking me from my thoughts and unwavering gaze on the attractive setter across from me. At the sound of my name, Kageyama looks up, catching me and my stare for a split second before my attention is drawn to the boy I had been innocently flirting with all weekend.
"Ooh, me too!" Hinata calls. My eyes roll but I stand up anyway in obligation.
To be dramatic, I curtsy royally as I do so. "What am I, a maid?"
"That would be hot." Kuroo flirts, eyes scanning over my body obnoxiously. My mouth clenches into a thinly amused line before I lean over and hit his shoulder. Akaashi and Bokuto laugh at the expense of their perverted friend.
I take drink orders and make my way over to the pavilion. I pass Daichi on my way and he accuses me of sneaking more drinks. I place my hands up in surrender and defend myself, saying I was merely making a drink run for the boys around the fire. He lets me pass when Suga takes his attention away from me. I smile secretly to him in thanks and he winks. My quest is resumed and I manage to finish my journey.
"For someone who just got cheated on, you seem to move on rather quickly." A voice speaks from behind me. My body abandons it's leaned down position and the cooler shuts at the interruption. My eyes land on none other than the silent setter. My brain evaluates his words a second after they escape from his perfect mouth and my eyebrows furrow in a slight hurt and confusion.
"I'm sorry." I blink a few times. "What?"
He continues without hesitation. His accusing words reach my ears again but this time he speaks precisely what I assume is on his mind. "You and Kuroo."
"And how the fuck exactly does that concern you in the slightest?" I ask harshly. My brain runs as fast as it can given my intoxication, spewing questions at me: how did he know I got cheated on? Hinata didn't know until I told him. Did Tadashi or Hinata tell him-
"I mean I was the one who saw your boyfriend flirt with other girls." He interrupts my thoughts. "I was the one who told Tadashi." He exposes himself before continuing. "I just figured it would take you a little longer to get over it."
Again, rage seeps into my veins at his words. He doesn't talk to me for the past two days and then when he finally does open his stupid mouth, it drips with judgment? "What the fuck does it matter to you?" I repeat angrily. I watch his arms cross over his chest.
"It doesn't. I'm merely making an observation." He speaks. Although fury fills every crevice of my brain and heart, I refuse to acknowledge the opinion of someone who has absolutely no business minding mine.
"Well keep your observation to yourself." I spit. My body bends back down into the cooler, a frown etched onto my features. My ears are hot as I try to breathe to calm myself down. If I were sober right now, I may be able to handle this situation a little bit better, but the confusion and alcohol that seep into my judgment have me unable to act and think as I normally would. Why the fuck did he even bring this up? Why follow me to the pavilion to bring up shit that doesn't even concern him? Oh shit, what drinks did I need to grab?
"Your boyfriend wanted a Miller lite, Hinata wanted a Smirnoff, and-"
"Can you shut the fuck up about Kuroo being my boyfriend?" I snap, letting the cooler fall closed once again. I watch his eyebrow raise in surprise at the higher octave my voice had unintentionally reached due to my overflowing frustration. His tongue darts out to coat his lips before he speaks again.
"You could at least act like you cared about the guy." Kageyama advises. My fist clenches at my side and I feel the boiling rage nearly spill out over the top of its containment. My lips part and I take a shaky breath inward. My cheeks are hot as I tear my gaze away from the boy who keeps digging himself into a deeper hole according to my judgment.
Because my drunken mouth refuses to remain shut and ignore his hurtful words. "Did you decide that your silent treatment had lasted long enough so you just woke up and chose violence? You could at least act like you're minding your own business." this slips off my tongue angrily. My fingers roughly tug at the lid of the cooler again, taking my anger out on the inanimate object. I grab whatever drinks I spot first, disinterested in whether or not I fulfilled the orders of the boys by the fire. All I know for sure is that I grabbed an extra one for myself. With the drinks now between my hands, I shut the cooler for the final time.
When I turn back around, my eyes meet Kageyama's a mere foot from mine. His deep blue eyes mirror mine: anger tainting the usual color. I swallow hard at the fog that seems to always surround us when we are alone together.
My eyes remain on his, unwilling to surrender my gaze to his.
Surprisingly, his eyes are the first to shift from mine. Only for a millisecond. His eyes land on my lips before immediately returning to match my gaze.
Without speaking, I let out a breath through my nose that I am almost certain held smoke due to the angry fire that burned the entirety of my senses.
"Last time I checked, you're being the opposite of nice." With that, I turn from the trap he had pulled me into, crawling my way out of the haze to rescue any sliver of dignity I have left.
