Kuroo POV:
I hadn't meant for Kenma to see that. I hadn't even meant for any of that to even happen. The girl from Friday had been angry I hadn't answered her all weekend. I told her it wasn't going to work out, and that I liked someone else, and when I did, she started just kissing me.
I didn't even want to kiss her back, but I also didn't want to make a scene.
When I saw Kenma my heart shattered. That was the last thing in the whole world I would have wanted him to see. I pushed away from the girl and followed him.
I kept close behind as I watched him in the gym. Seeing him that upset nearly broke me. I wanted more than anything to just go and hug him.
When he had calmed down and there were probably less than 10 minutes left of lunch, I went into the gym. He had moved to one of the benches and cried into his bag in his lap. I approached him slowly.
"Kenma?"
He paused before sniffling, "What the hell is wrong with you?" He asked in a hushed tone, refusing to look up at me.
"You could have just told me face to face that you didn't want anything to do with me. It's fine really. I don't care..."
"Kenma..."
"No. For once Kuroo, you listen to me. How do you think it made me feel. To walk up to my best friend, who I had thought maybe also gave a shit about me, only to see him making out with a girl in the spot where we've sat since day one of high school? Huh? After I'd just spent a day taking care of you and making sure you were safe, because you at least mean something to me!"
He stood up and grabbed my sweater vest,
"HOW DO YOU THINK THAT MADE ME FEEL?!" He asked, his eyebrows furrowed and teeth almost snarling.
He took a deep breath and tucked some hair behind his ear, his face still raging. He pushed me backwards, letting go on the necktie, before wiping his nose.He picked his bag up off the bench, brushing past me on his way out.
I felt numb.
~~~~~~~~
The majority of that week passed and anytime I tried to talk to him or do anything he ignored me. Not once making eye contact with me.
At volleyball he'd give a half hearted response to my plays, but more enthusiastic ones to all the other players.
On Thursday I decided enough was enough.
After school I set to work.
I wouldn't take no for an answer.When the preparations came out of the oven, I fixed myself up and headed next door. I rang the doorbell with no response.
Knocking gave the same outcome.
Fine, I thought. I hopped the back fence and found the hidden spare key. Climbing back to the front I opened the door."KENMA KOZUME! YOU COME AND LISTEN TO WHAT I HAVE TO SAY OR SO HELP ME!" I yelled.
A moment later Kenma arrived at the base of the stairs by the front entrance. His hair was tangled and he had some of the biggest and darkest eye bags I'd ever seen. His expression was beyond puzzled as he held his PSP in his hand.
"Sit down." I demanded.
"Why should I listen to anything you have to say?"
"Because I made you an apple pie."
He looked down at the round foil-covered pan and gulped. I knew he wouldn't say no, so I opened it and served him a slice.
"Kenma, I'm sorry. I'm so, so, sorry. I didn't even want to kiss her. She just pulled me in and wouldn't stop. I didn't know how to get away. You walked in on the worst thing I've done in a long time, and I honestly don't know how to apologize for it, but could we at least take a walk?"
He didn't respond, but by now the plate had been cleared and he stood up, still not looking me in the eyes.
I opened the front door for him and we began to walk. The sun was setting and I knew it would get cold fast.
"Kenma, I want to ruin our friendship."
He stopped dead in his tracks, turning to me.
"What?! Kuroo what is wrong with you! One moment you say you're sorry and the next you go and say you're done being friends with me?! I canno-"
I interrupted him,
"I didn't know how to tell you, because well you're my best friend in the whole world and I never want to lose you, but I, well I like you. I like you like a lot, Kenma."He looked up at me as I stared up at the sunset, digging my hands further into my pants pockets.
"what?" He said barely auditable, "if this is some sort of sick joke, I swear, I'm never talking to you again."
"I swear it's not a joke." I looked back down at him.
He blinked, staring.
"Uhm, I don't know what to say...""How about: Oh my gosh!! Finally!! My Prince Charming!! At last he's come and confessed his feeling!!" I said smiling,overly acting on the sidewalk.
He punched my ribs and rolled his eyes,
"How about instead: I really like you too Kuro. Does that work?"I smiled down at him, "yeah that works."
We walked back to his house and on our way we brushed hands, so I decided I'd shoot my shot.
"Kenma, your hand looks very cold. Would you like me to hold that for you?" I took his hand and he did the cat thing where his hair stood on end. "Kuro, your hands are even colder than mine." He laughed.
We parted ways at his house and I went back home.
"Kuroo? Can you come here?" My grandma had asked me. I walked into the living room to see her sat on the couch.
"Is everything alright?" I asked. Typically we ate meals together on the weekends, and ventured into town with my grandparents but for the most part they remained upstairs in their area of the house.
"Yes yes, everything is fine. Your father told us about Kenma."
Oh god, I thought. How is an almost 70 year old woman going to react. I backed up slightly, and loosened my tie.
"When are you going to have him over for dinner?" She asked.
"I- we, I mean he's eaten here before?"
"Yes, but it's been ages since I've seen him and I want to catch up. How about tomorrow night?"
"Kenma isn't really one for conversation. Plus, tutors me on Friday's for English-"
"Alright tomorrow night it is then!"
My grandma was stubborn and hardly took no for an answer once she had made her mind up. I really had no choice, so I rang up Kenma.
"Oya Kitte- ... uhm Kenma?"
I can't believe I just did that over the phone."What did you just call me?"
"... I called you Kenma."
"No, before that..."
"..."
"Kuro?"
"..."
"You there?"
"I, yeah I'm here... uhm look, I called because my grandma, do you remember her? She's pretty tall and thin?"
"Yes I remember her, why?"
"She wants you to come over tomorrow night for dinner... to celebrate..."
"What about tutoring?"
"I guess we do it at my house?"
"Okay I'll ask my mom, but that's probably a yes."
"Okay, I'll see you tomorrow...Goodnight kitten."
I wanted to see what would happen.
"...Goodnight, Kuro." I could tell he was smiling through the phone.
