Dinner

Kenma's POV:

Friday at school came and went quite quickly. I sat with Kuroo at lunch and we talked almost the whole time. I honestly couldn't believe he liked me, and it sent a wave of nerves over me for no real reason. Still, we were taking things as they came, which was much appreciated by me.

At practice we also seemed to click more and played much better than earlier that week, which was a relief. I think Lev noticed because he questioned us, but I shrugged him off.

After school we walked to our separate houses to get ready for the dinner. I wasn't quite sure how formal to be, or what to wear, so I just settled on something warm.

"Hey mom?"

"Yes Kenma?"

"Could you.. uhm, could you help me with my hair?"

It was getting long, and though I liked to have it in my face, I wanted to do something new.

A split second later my mom came running into my room, slamming the door open, out of breath with a brush in one hand, and hair ties in the other.

"Oh my god mom-"

"I THOUGHT YOU'D NEVER ASK!"

"Please calm down, I just need some help."

"ANYTHING!"

I had told her about the dinner and she was more than overjoyed and relieved that Kuroo and I had made up. Though she claimed that she knew we'd be fine all along.

Before I knew it, I was ushered into the upstairs bathroom and sat on the counter.
"So what do you want me to do?"
She asked smiling and still gripping the hair brush almost aggressively.

"Uhm, well I didn't really get that far..."

"Can I try something?"

"Sure."

I finished getting ready and decided to try a new style of eyeliner while I was at it.

"DONT FORGET MY FLOWERS!"

"Yes mom, I won't forget."

Kuroo POV:

I rushed to the door when I heard the chime. I opened it and saw Kenma stood in front of me. My eyes went wide as I glanced him up and down, shifting my weight from side to side.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

"You're...breathtaking."

His hair was pulled back (but just the top half) into a small bun. A braid on the side was weaved into the bun as well. His eyeliner was different tonight too. It was pointed on the inner corner as well as winged.  He only wore a simple sweater and some jeans, yet he literally took my breath away. I didn't know that was even possible.

I regained my senses and saw just how uneasy he looked.
The flowers he held fell to his side, "kuro, I'm really nervous.." he looked down and talked quietly.

Me too, I thought. But Kenma can't know that.

I took his free hand and held it in both of mine.
"It's gonna be alright, I'm here and I'll talk when you don't. They already love you, so just be your normal self, okay kitten?"

I smiled and kissed his knuckles.
"Kuro! Stop that!" He looked up at me smiling and flushed a beet red. I squeezed his hand and we walked in together.

We walked into the dining room where my grandfather was already sat and reading the paper.

"Good evening sir." Kenma bowed in front of the table slightly.

"Oh there's no need for that Kenma. Go put those flowers in a vase, would you?"

Yeah, that was my grandfather. Blunt but loving.

"O-okay."
I gave him a reassuring smile as he headed into the kitchen.

I turned my attention to my grandfather once Kenma was out of ear-shot.
"Could you maybe.. well I don't know, be a bit less candid to him? These sorts of things really put him on edge, you know?"

"Was I being blunt?" My grandfather asked.
I sighed, going into the kitchen to make sure everything was alright.

I walked in on my grandmother smothering Kenma in a very tight hug and swinging him from side to side, his feet off the ground.

"Grandma!" I looked at her and she released him.

She shrugged and smiled, "Oh it's just been so long since we've seen you Kenma!!"
She patted him on the head with the back of a large wooden spoon.

"Uhm, m-my mom brought these and so I was uh, going to ask for a vase."

"Oh those are wonderful!! Your mother is a very kind woman. Thank you dear."

She took the flowers and set to work cutting the bottoms of the stems, removing some of the extra leaves, and arranging them in a bouquet.

"Cmon," I motioned my head back to the dining room. We took some seats, Kenma on my right, and my grandfather at the head of the table on my left. A couple minutes later my father joined us, sitting at the head of the table on the opposite end.

"So, Kenma, what do you do for fun?" I could tell my grandfather was trying to be a bit less intense.

"Oh I.. well I play volleyball with Kuroo, and I guess besides that I play a lot of video games?"

"Is that so? Well I played my fair share of games in my youth too, though I was more his fathers age." He said nodding to me. "Still, they were fun."

I saw Kenma's eyes light up as he realized they both like games.

"Did you... play arcade games?"

My grandfather laughed, "Of course! What else was there?"
For the first time that evening, Kenma smiled.

"Boys! Dinners ready!" My grandmother called from the kitchen as she came walking in, balancing many plates of hot food.

"Let me help you!" I jumped up to take a couple of the plates.

"Oh thank you, Kuroo. There's a couple more in the kitchen, do you mind getting them too?"
