POV: ERWIN SMITH.
"Are you both aware of the Titans?"
After seeing that piece of technology myself, I had little to no doubt that these boys are from a place beyond the confines of our walls. I had no idea if there was any possible material or extent of knowledge here for those boys to create something like that 'Phone' here, and putting my trust in their claims is a huge gamble itself.
But I'm no stranger to gambles. What's life without taking them? This risk was something I was willing to bet my life on if it meant the slightest chance of finding the secrets behind humanity within the walls. Or the possibility of there being society beyond it.
As I asked this question to the duo of suspected foreigners, I had expected them to know. I had expected them to nod their heads, aware of the fear and terror that the Titans brought to humanity. How they caused humanity to hide behind walls in an attempt to survive. How millions of people lost their lives to these monsters. If anything, I assumed that these boys lived in a society that has already fought off the Titans. That there was hope for humanity if the place they came from managed to survive and win against them. Maybe they had walls too? Perhaps they lived underground or-
I didn't expect them to shake their heads. I didn't expect them to answer in unison with a defined "no." I froze. How is it possible that these two not know about the monsters that forced humanity- or at least the population that we belong to -to hide behind giant walls over fifty meters tall? How could they come from a place that knew nothing of the terror they caused?
Perhaps it is we who know nothing of our world.
I took a deep breath and nodded. Recollecting my thoughts, I had to remind myself why I asked them these questions and what to do with these answers. After discussing with Levi and Hange about it, we had come to the agreement to keep these boys here to get the information we could, and hopefully find where they came from and return them home. As cruel as it is to keep them here at their age and most likely against their will, I had lost count of the times I threw morals aside for the sake of humanity. And here I am, doing it again.
"We ask that you boys stay here with us and provide us with information about where you come from. Once we are satisfied with what we have learned, we will do everything in our power to find and return you to your home. Even if you were to say no, we will keep you in our custody. So choose, either cooperate with us and we will provide you with a place to stay and our protection, or decline and we will keep you in a dungeon until we feed you to the Titans. You can accept our offer, and even spit lies if you want. Say, what do you choose?"
I felt guilty for forcing such young boys to make a decision like this. But I was their age once I chose to become a soldier. We do cruel things to survive. And it didn't matter if we made one again to advance forward for humanity.
The boy with ginger hair- I believe he said his name was "Shoyo Hinata" -hardened his expression. His eyebrows furrowed in a determined display. "Sir, can you possibly get us home by next week?"
Next- Next week?! Is he crazy?
The taller raven-haired boy who showed us the 'Phone' nodded in agreement with Shoyo and added to the impossible request. "Yes, Mr. Smith. We have an important round of practice games with our volleyball team that is essential to our improvement next week, and missing them would be the worst possible scenario," Tobio stated, in a matter-of-factly fashion. It felt like I was sitting in the military room making plans for the next mission.
I sighed, feeling a sort of defeat that they would request that. It didn't help that I had absolutely no idea what this 'volleyball' is, so I couldn't even help them in the slightest in that matter. They made it sound like they would miss an important mission, which is possibly why they ended up so far from home. Maybe they were scouts from their homeland on a mission, getting mixed up and ending up here. But how they got past Wall Maria and never seeing them is impossible, so I won't consider that as a sure scenario. Unless of course, they're lying.
