Day Twenty-Two

Michael's POV:

As fun as last night was, I looked forward to waking up with her the most. That was something I hadn't felt since the beginning of Jessie and I's relationship.

Today was the day, and nothing was going to stop me. It was time to just tell her.

I ran my fingers through her soft, bouncy curls, careful not to wake her. She looked so peaceful when she slept. Who was I to disturb her?

It was impossible for me to wrap my head around how perfect she was. Not just her body and the way she looked, but just how innocent she was.

Or so I thought until last night. Even that was perfect.

God, where did she come from?

I wanted to give what was blossoming between us a chance. Ever since she came into my life, I knew I would never be the same.

For whatever reason, Jessie and I kept on running into each other, only making this much more difficult.

She sighed through her nose as she started to wake up. She opened her eyes and looked around the room. The candles had burned out, and the light came in from window.

"Michael." She said without raising her head to look at me. "I love you."

I smiled at her. "I lo-"

A loud bark from downstairs caused us both to jump. We both gave each other a look of confusion.

That was unlike Bruno. He never barked for no reason. Of course the time he decides to is when I was about to finally tell her.

The doorbell rang throughout the house. That explained it. He must've saw someone coming up to the house.

I got out of bed and put on my clothes. "Stay here, I'll be right back." I said.

I left the room and hurried downstairs to the front door. Surprise and confusion came over me once I saw who stood on the other side of the door.

Jewel's POV:

I heard hushed whispers from downstairs. I know Michael told me to stay in the room, but I wanted to know what they were saying.

I wrapped my robe around my body and tiptoed into the hallway. I stood at the top of the stairs and listened to their conversation.

"Jessie? What are you doing here? Especially now?"

"I was talking to Ms. Daphne and she was asking about you since you didn't walk Bruno at your usual time today. So I came to check up on you."

"You couldn't have given me a call? You had to come to my house.

"I was in the area so I just figured I'd stop by. Why aren't you be happy to see me? Especially after last night."

I walked to the bottom of the stairs and stood there with my arms crossed. "After last night?" I repeated.

Michael and Jessie both looked over at me. The look on Michael's face was one of pure embarrassment.

"Michael, who the hell is this?" Jessie asked in frustration.

"Michael, why the hell is she here?" I asked in return.

He sighed. "Jessie, This is Jewel." He said. He turned to me. "And I don't know why she's here."

She rolled her eyes. "Well after last night I figured you'd be a lot happier than you are to see me."

"What happened last night?" I asked.

Jessie's face brightened. "Well we went on a nice date and then we went back to my place and then-"

"Jessie!" Michael scolded while cutting her a harsh glare.

I felt tears well up in my eyes. "Oh really?" I said in my best attempt to hold them back.

"Jewel, listen-"

I put my hand up to stop him. "Don't even. I don't even want to hear it."

I turned my back to him and ran up the stairs. I heard him call after me but I ignored him.

I ran into my room and slammed the door shut, making sure to lock it.

I buried my face into my pillow and started to cry. I cried so hard that my body shook and my chest began to hurt.

I rolled over and stared up at the ceiling.

Every time I felt like I was getting somewhere with him, Jessie always stood in my way. Either physically, or in Michael's heart.

Ursa's POV:

"Oh, Harold! Look at the poor girl!" I laughed. "Watching her weep like this over a human almost makes me feel sorry for her."

He gave me a crazy look.

"You know I'm kidding!" I said resuming in my laughter. "She only has nine more days of suffering. Unless she decides to return to the sea."

"Ursa!"

I jumped at the sound of the booming voice. Triton, Assan, and Aaron swam into my cave.

I straightened myself up. "Hello your majesty!"

He held a stone face. "We want an update on the potion, and we want you to show us how Jewel is doing on the surface."

"Oh, of course! The potion..." I trailed off. "It's going well." I said.

Assan raised a brow. "How well?"

I led them over to my cauldron. "I have to let it sit for a few more days because the ingredients need to... sit." I said.

He sighed. "As long as it brings my Jewel back. Show us how she's doing."

I nodded. "Of course."

They followed me to my crystal ball. I waved my hands around it and the image of Jewel sleeping soundly atop Michael's chest appeared.

"She looks so happy." Assan said quietly with a sigh.

Aaron's face was crooked with jealousy.

She uttered the words of "I love you" to Michael.

"Oh, Jewel." Assan whispered.

Triton nudged him. "This is nonsense! We must bring her back as soon as possible!" He boomed.

"How much longer will it take?" Aaron asked.

"I can't answer that for sure." I said.

Assan's face turned white. "Well do something! Don't let my daughter die!"

I sighed. "I'll do my best."
