Day Eight~

Jewel's POV:

I opened my eyes and stared out toward the ocean. Wed been there all night. The sun had begun rising, and Michael still hadn't woken up.

I continued listening to his heartbeat as I rested my head on his chest. That was the only thing keeping the both of us going.

I felt him take a deep breath and start coughing.

I got off his chest so he could get more air.

"Michael!" I said through happy tears.

Michael's POV:

I kept on coughing to clear my lungs of water.

I opened my eyes and was met with the beautiful face of Jewel hovering over me.
Her curls and her necklace hung low, brushing my face.

I glanced at my watch, surprised that it was still working. It was five am.

"You're awake!" She said.

I sat up and held my head in my hands. "My head is killing me. What the hell happened?" I asked.

"You don't remember?" She asked.

I shook my head. "Not much... I remember we were on the ship and then a storm hit. Everything after that is a blur."

"I don't blame you. That pole hit you pretty hard." She said.

My eyes widened. "Pole? What pole?"

"When you were helping Elijah keep the boat steady, the roof came off and a pole hit you right on your head. It knocked you out and once you let go, the boat flipped over."

"Elijah's boat sunk?" I asked.

She nodded. "A total shipwreck."

I felt on the side of my head where a huge knot was. It was all starting to come back to me now.

"We were in the middle of the ocean. How did we get here?" I asked.

"I swam us back to shore."

"You swam?"

"That was all I could do. I had to do it or we'd both die." She said.

"Are you okay?" I asked. Her clothes were tattered, torn, and soaked in sea water. Here's were in much worse condition than mine.

"Look at you! Your clothes are all torn." I said.

She shrugged. "I'm okay. I was more worried about you than I was about myself." She said.

"But why?"

She glanced down at the sand. "I couldn't let you die. I wouldn't be able to live without you." She said weakly.

I couldn't believe it. This girl had a frame that was way too small to drag us both back to the shore from out in the middle of the ocean.

Once the initial shock wore off, I pulled her into me for a hug. "Thank you for saving my life." I said.

She squeezed me tight. "Of course."

He pulled away from the hug and we just looked at each other for a moment.

After thinking about it, Jewel was oddly familiar. The way her smooth voice sounded over the ocean waves, I'd definitely heard it before.

Maybe I was insane. I would know if I'd met her before.

"Where are the others?" I asked as I looked around.

She shrugged. "I don't know. I only saved you. I could only save you."

My chest tightened. "They could be dead!" I said.

"We're okay!"

Jewel and I looked toward the sea and saw Eric, Elijah, and Olivia all coming toward the shore. They held on to a piece of debris from the destroyed boat.

I stood up and ran closer to the ocean, ignoring the pounding in my head.

"We thought we lost you two!" Eric said once they all reached the beach.

"We thought we lost you guys." I said in return.

"Especially you, Mike! When that pole hit you in your head, my heart stopped. I thought that alone killed you. I thought lost my best friend." Eric said as he started to tear up.

"I have a splitting headache, but I'm alright." I said, holding the knot on my forehead again.

"How did you even manage to get back? Once you got hit and fell into the water I thought you were done for." Elijah said.

I glanced at Jewel who stood behind me. "Someway, somehow, she swam me all the way back to the beach.

All three of them shared the same surprised expression as I did when she told me.

"She what?"

"I had to." Jewel said. "We both would've died."

"Mike is so much bigger than you! How strong are you, girl?" Eric asked.

Jewel shrugged, not caring enough to really put much thought to the question.

Elijah sighed. "Well I'm glad we're all okay, but I'm definitely not happy about my boat." He said.

Eric rested his hand on his shoulder. "I know bro, but you can always get another."

"Lets all just get off of this beach and go home." I said. "We're probably not going to feel so hot for a while after swallowing so much saltwater."

"Shouldn't we call an ambulance or something just to make sure we're re all okay?" Olivia suggested. "Especially for you, Michael."

I shook my head. "I really don't want to go to the hospital." I said. "The best thing for me to get home."

We all trudged to the parking lot wet and in our ripped clothes. Thankfully no one was around the empty parking lot.

It was very fortunate that I left my car door unlocked with the key still inside. If I hadn't, the car keys would've sunken with the ship like my phone.

Jewel and I got into the car. I started the engine and began driving. My head continued pounding, gaining intensity the further I drove.

It was a tough drive with my reckless headache. I couldn't imagine it getting any worse.
