Chapter 1
Mac desperately wanted a milkshake. Not just any milkshake, a Vanilla milkshake with fresh cream. She could practically taste it. After pondering for an hour, she decided that it wasn't practical to waste money when she
needed to save money for a new pair of sports shoes for her little brother. Riley went through shoes like an endless railway. His feet kept growing. At this rate, he might be on his way to becoming the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk.Riley was two years old when their parents died after their boat capsized in a freak accident while enjoying a Sunday cruise with their friends, the Nikolov's. Since then, Mac had looked after her brother. She didn't mind the responsibility although it was tough for a twelve year old. Her mind drifted into memories of those days and the boy, for whom, her heart beat like a cricket on steroids.
Unplugging the iron and folding the shirt she was busy with, she turned around to put the iron away when a streak of black raced past her. "Toothless! You silly Billy cat! You scared the hell out of me. Watch where you going."
Placing the iron in the cuboard, Mac looked up to where a hissing sound was coming from. Toothless, named after the dragon, was standing on the window sill and hissing at her. Mac laughed as Toothless gave her a mean look. Clearly, AJ had given her a bath. The cat's hair was sticking up in all different directions and her yellow greenish eyes was focused on Mac in an evil way. Toothless hated baths. AJ loved to bath them. Them being Toothless and her son, Shadow. While Toothless was completely black, Shadow was a striped grey cat with greenish yellow eyes. Mac's family consisted of four members. AJ, the two cats and Mac. There used to be more but not any more.
Giving up on any more housework for the day, Mac decided she needed to do something crazy. Picking up the phone, she called her friend. "Hey Jenny, please come over. I really need to do something crazy and fun before I shoot myself with AJ's pellet gun." Once Jenny confirmed that she was game to be crazy Mac ended the call and started running around gathering stuff, while mentally planning that evening's event.
AJ was sleeping over at a friend's house as it was a Friday, so Mac was alone at home. She hated being alone as it gave her too much time to think. Thinking wasn't good if it led to tears. Thinking definitely wasn't good if it led to him, who shall not be named. His name, just made her angry. Thinking wasn't good when all it brought, was, sorrow.Gathering a can of paint, balloons, and toilet paper, Mac changed into a black, long sleeve, t-shirt, baggy black sweat pants and black sneakers. She tied her hair into a pony and put on a black cap.
"Great Mac! You look like a burglar, " she said to herself. Her doorbell rang just then. Giving herself a wink, she opened the door after checking the peephole and leaning against the door, she gave a sultry pose.In a fake southern accent, she said, " Sugar, whatever you're selling, I'm buying. You sure do look sexy." She winked at the person in front of her. "Buzz off you creep, before I call my big ass boyfriend to beat you up." " Oh sweety, the more the merrier," she said, while wiggling her eyebrows suggestively. " For fifty bucks, I'll throw in the old scarecrow next door for free." "Huh? How can it be free if you're charging fifty bucks," asked the person at the door. "OMG! You are absolutely correct. And the winner is.....? Nah! Wrong show. Ladies and not so gentlemen, the Emmy goes to ......the big ass blonde with the big ass boyfriend, wait for it, Jenny Nikolova."
Jenny bowed then entered the apartment, pretending to twirl her invisible mustache. "My dear wannabe Crazeee, I missed you. What's on the menu tonight? No don't answer that. I will guess." Jenny had already spied the items on the kitchen counter. Mac had been forced to move to a small apartment that was basically one over sized room that held a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom, separated by nothing. The bathroom door and the front door were the only doors. There was a screen separating the kitchen from the old sofa and the 2 single beds. A far cry, from the mansion they had lived in while growing up.
Grinning, the two friends looked at each other. "Let's do it," they said in unison.
