"The girl steps out into the light, and I see my younger self in the mirror holding my old bow."
November 5, 2010
"Here Cha. This is how you do it." I take the doll from her little hands, and weave my finger through its hair like how Mama showed me when I was her age then put a little black rubber band on the tip of the braid.
"Thank you, Nini." She replies as I return the Barbie Doll.
Mama calls us from the kitchen before either of us can yes anything.
"C'mon girls. Hurry."
Chanel grabs her bunny and we start for the kitchen.
Chanel runs up to Mama and grabs her floral apron. "What's a matter, Mama?" She peps.
"Shush. It's okay. Mama just needs her two big girls to play a game. Do you two wanna play a game?"
A game...
"Yes Mama!" Chanel answers.
"We are going to play hide and seek from Daddy, alright?"
"Okay."
"You two hide in the cabinets. Don't come out no matter what you hear."
I raise an eyebrow.
'Mama, you don't have to sugar coat it for me. I'm thirteen. What's happening?'
She shakes her head. 'It's nothing. Just keep Chanel calm.'
I give her a look, but she shoos me to the cabinet.
She opens the cabinet door; Chanel slides in first then I slide in beside her. "Don't be scared girls everything is okay." Then she closes the door leaving us in the dark.
Chanel moves closer her little hand grabs my arm, but she stays silent. Even she, a little five year old girl could tell some was terribly wrong.
A sound as loud as thunder in a monstrous tropical storm roars outside. The hinges of the cabinet rattle about. I slap my hand over Chanel's mouth, and bite my lower lip so hard I taste copper.
"Where is she?!" The voice so low, gravelly, hoarse it's the voice of the monster that lurks in the dark cover of your bed.
"She's gone. I told them both to run." Mama says in her slow, sweet molasses-like tone. Though she's spent eight years away from her home in the country she is still a smooth southern bell.
"Don't play dumb with me, Olivia. I can smell her. She's here. Hand her over and I might let the other one live."
"Father," it was him. At two years my senior he was already the monster his father was. "She's in the kitchen. I can sense her presence."
The atmosphere sifts it's more tense. I feel Mama lose her façade.
"You're not taking my daughter anywhere." Daddy snaps.
Chanel whimpers as there's a swooshing noise and the bitter, throat burning smell of purify silver.
"Stay hear son. Daddy needs to take care of some ignorant Omegas."
