Daichi's POV
Sugawara looks at the paper, crumples it up, and throws it on the table.
He stands up. "I'll be right back." He leaves the room, obviously upset.
Azumane and I look at the crumpled up piece of paper in front of us. "Should we look at it?" I ask him.
He shrugs.
I want to see what's bothering him. I may have just met Sugawara this morning, but I feel like I've known him my whole life. I care about him so much already, I need to know. I reach for the ball of paper.
"Is this a good idea?" Azumane signs nervously.
I noticed that everyone else at this school has already found their soulmates, except for us three. We need to stick together and help each other. "I'm looking at it." I sign before opening the piece of paper.
I look at the piece of paper, wide-eyed. No wonder he left the room. "What does it say?" Azumane questions.
I show him the piece of paper, which had a drawing of Sugawara next to the grave of his soulmate. Terrible.
We both stare at it wide-eyed.
I get up, "I'm gonna go look for him."
Azumane gets up, "Me too."
We leave the room. I'm assuming he went to the restroom.
We walk to the restroom. Sure enough, he's in there. We walk in. He doesn't notice.
He's crying. Trying to hype himself up in the mirror. Like a child. Cute.
A few seconds later he notices us. We both wave.
He turns around, embarrassed, with tears in his eyes, "What are you two doing here?"
"We may or may not have looked at the paper you left on the table." Azumane nervously signs.
I elbow him. "Don't start with that." I facepalm. "We were worried about you after we looked at it, so we came to look for you."
Sugawara sniffles, "I'm fine." He pauses, "This isn't the first time they've done something like this anyways." He rinses his face in the sink.
We wait for him to finish washing his face before trying to get his attention. God damn it, this world is so difficult.
"So how long has this been going on?" Azumane signs as Sugawara turns around.
Sugawara dries his face, "I told you that already, since Kindergarten."
"That is not ok." I sigh.
Sugawara looks at us, confused, "Why do you two care so much?" He pauses, "We literally met three hours ago."
I think back to what I thought about earlier, "We need to stick together." I pause, thinking about how to word this, "No one else at this school knows what it's like going into high school without your soulmate."
Azumane nods. "Only us three."
"How do you know that?" Sugawara asks.
I sigh, "No one else is using sign language, that I've seen."
Azumane nods.
Sugawara sighs, "I don't know what to say." He pauses, "Let's just.. go back to the classroom."
