DANCING QUEEN — ABBA Young and sweet Only seventeen
FEBRUARY, 1994. SEVENTEEN MONTHS BEFORE.
JANUARY CAME AND went, leaving pink and red flurries of love in the air. The new year had been kind to Sunset Curve so far. The billboard above Sonny's attracted more music industry folk into the diner and it was only a matter of time that one of them approached the band (or at least that's what they were hoping for). Aside from that, their individual lives have been good as well. Bobby had taken Allie out on a few dates, Alex was on top of all his AP classes, Reggie's parents got a new car and gave him their old one (though it was practically already his), and Luke and Olivia wrote a dozen new songs together. They hoped that February brought the same energy.
The band sat at a table in the cafeteria of Los Feliz High School. All around them were red heart decorations and lovesick couples.
"Valentine's Day is stupid." Alex threw the empty bag of chips onto the table with a look of distaste on his face. "You shouldn't need a fake holiday to show the person you love that you love them."
Bobby looked up at him, poking at the salad he had brought for lunch. "How is Valentine's Day a fake holiday?"
"If we don't get the day off from school, it's a fake holiday."
Bobby paused thoughtfully. "Yeah, you have a point."
Olivia opened her bag of baked goods and pushed it to the centre of the table. "So Bobby," she started, "what are you and Allie planning to do on Friday?"
His brows furrowed. "What do you mean?"
"You've been talking to her for so long. Valentine's Day would be the perfect time to make things official."
"I don't know," he fret, eyes bouncing between his friends, "what if she says no?"
Reggie leaned forward and took a cookie from the middle of the table. "Then she says no and we can spend the night eating more of Miss Sylvia's cookies in the studio."
Luke stopped fidgeting with the bulky object in his hand, ignoring the questioning looks his friends gave him, then took his own cookie and bit into it. "I kinda hope she says no now."
Bobby rolled his eyes, not particularly wanting to talk about his plans to take Allie out. He might've talked about her a lot in the past few weeks, but now that he had a real shot of being her boyfriend, he didn't want to jinx it. "Where the hell did you get a video camera?" he asked, switching the subject. He narrowed his eyes at the electronic sitting on the table.
"CJ was selling it for a tenner," Luke answered. "I figured whatever footage we get would make a good documentary for when we're famous."
