OUT OF THE WOODS — TAYLOR SWIFT
Remember when you hit the brakes too soon?

OLIVIA PACED BACK and forth in her bedroom. She was starting to regret letting the boys surprise her with the majority of their plans tonight because her mind started to run rampant with worst case scenarios. Knowing the boys, their plans would stem from good intention, but knowing the way life worked out, it wasn't guaranteed to work out that way.

The phone beside her bed started to ring and Olivia answered it, thinking that it was Reggie telling her that he was on his way to pick her up.

"Hey," she said, picking up her phone and taking it with her as she continued to pace, "so I know you said you wanted to surprise me, but can you just tell me what we're doing because I'm kinda freaking out."

There was a beat of silence.

"Uh, I don't think I'm the person you were expecting."

Olivia took a sharp inhale of breath and stopped in her spot. She kissed her teeth once her initial shock subsided and placed the phone back on the nightstand. "Definitely not," she muttered to herself. "What do you want, Jason?"

The boy on the other end of the phone wasn't fazed by the tone of her voice. A part of him liked that he was still able to get under her skin. There was a thin line between love and hate, and he took her annoyance as a sign that she still cared. "I was just calling to say happy birthday."

"Why?" He's never gone out of his way to send her well wishes before, so she was a little suspicious of his intentions.

The smirk Jason wore faded at her question. "Because I care about you."

"No, you don't." The farther she got away from the breakup, the less she cared and the more she realized how self centred Jason really was. He didn't mean his words, maybe he thought he did, but his actions never made it appear so. Figuring that it'd be best to leave the conversation with grace, Olivia bit the inside of her cheek and said, "But thanks for the well wishes. Bye now."

Jason could hear shuffling on the other end and panicked. "Wait, wait, wait!" He took a breath when he knew Olivia wasn't going to hang up just yet. "Olivia, I just..."

"You just what?" Olivia sighed, tired of him trying to explain himself.

He cheated on her, they broke up, and that was the end of it. No matter how much it might've hurt her, no matter how much she (previously) cared for him, no matter how much that tiny sliver of her wanted to go back in time to when their relationship was good, she knew that they were in the past now. They were done. And he had to come to that realization too.

"Look, Jason..." Olivia started, her voice void of any hostility. "You can't keep doing this. Whatever we had is done. For good, okay? I'm not the same person you dated four months ago. I'm happier now and—"
