Peridot used to belong. That is until her world was destroyed and her family are rescued by the DIRA, the Displaced Intergalactic Refugee Agency. But safety comes at a price. Along with thousands of other displaced refugees from across the galaxy, Peri is given a new body, a new name, and a home at the very last place anyone wants: Earth. Earth is strange, beautiful, and full of rules that make no sense. Humans are suspicious. Teachers are unfair. Small talk is a battlefield. The only things that feel real are her new friends, Fierce, funny and gloriously different, and the pull she feels toward the mysterious crystals hidden beneath Earth's surface. When an ancient message is discovered in a long forgotten cave, Peri learns that Earth was never safe for some kinds. As old powers awaken and secrets unravel, Peri must decide who she is, where she belongs, and whether she's brave enough to act in defense of a planet she never wanted to call home. A story about friendship, identity, prejudice, and the art of being human.

Minerva Anderson and Bennett Shaw have been inseparable since birth, getting themselves in and out of trouble around the once-great city of New York, now known as the New Order. At a young age, the two watched as the city become overflowed with refugees escaping from a civil war beyond, leading to two new doctrines that would reform the New Order - walls surrounding the perimeter and an unlucky lottery.
