I was working on my divination homework in the gryffindor common room. And by 'working' I mean I'm making stuff as I went.
Hermione climbed into the common room, carrying a sheaf of parchment in one hand and a box, whose contents rattled as she walked, in the other.
She beamed at us. "Hello, I've just finished!"
"So have I!" Ron threw his quill down.
Hermione sat her things down, and pulled his predictions towards her. "You're not going to have a very good month, are you?"
"Ah well, at least I'm forewarned." He yawned.
"You seem to be drowning twice."
"Oh, am I? I'd better change one of them to getting trampled by a rampaging hippogriff."
"Or getting your face slashed by one." I muttered, not looking up from my work.
"Don't you think it's a bit obvious you've made these up?" Hermione asked.
"How dare you!" Ron mocked an outrage. "We've been working hard like house elves here!"
I laughed when hermione raised her eyebrows.
"It's just an expression." Ron said hastily.
"What's in the box?" Harry asked, pointing at it.
"Funny you should ask." She threw a nasty look at ron. She took the lid off, and showed us all the contents.
Inside were about fifty badges, all of different colors, but bearing the same letters: S.P.E.W.
"Spew?" I said, picking up a badge to examine it. "What's this about?"
"Not spew. It's S-P-E-W. Stands for the society for the promotion of elfish welfare."
"Never heard of it." Ron said.
"Well, of course you haven't. I've only just started it."
"Yeah? How many members have you got?"
"Well - if you three join - four." She answered.
"And you think we want to walk around wearing badges saying 'spew', do you?"
I swear, ron and hermione fight like an old married couple.
"S-P-E-W!" Hermione said hotly. "I was going to put Stop the Outrageous Abuse of Our Fellow Magical Creature and Campaign for a Change in Their Legal Status - but it wouldn't fit. So that's the heading of out manifesto."
"Honestly, hermione, half of what you said went in one ear, and out the other." I said, combing my fingers through my hair.
"I've been researching it thoroughly in the library. Elf enslavement goes back centuries. I can't believe no one's done anything about it before now."
I sat up straight in my seat. "Hermione, listen to me. They. Like. It. They like being enslaved."
"Our short term aims," Hermione started to speak more loudly than me, and acting as though she hadn't heard a word I just said. "are to secure house elves fairs wages and working conditions. Our long term aims include changing the law about non wand use, and trying to get an elf into the department for the regulation and control of magical creatures, because they're shockingly under represented."
I sat back, pursing my lips. Okay, I guess what I have to say isn't important.
"And how do we do this?" Harry asked.
"We start by recruiting members." Hermione said happily. "I thought two sickles to join - that buys a badge - and the proceeds can fund our leaflet campaign. You're treasurer, ron - I've got you a collecting tin upstairs - harry, you're secretary, so you might want to write down everything I'm saying now, as a record of our first meeting. And y/n, you're vice president."
There was a pause in which hermione beamed at the three of us. I had no idea what to say. She's giving me the vice president position even though I'm telling her that the house elves like being enslaved.
The silence was suddenly broken by a soft tap on the window. Harry looked over to the window, and his eyes widen.
"Hedwig!" He rushed over and allowed her inside. "About time."
She landed softly on his homework.
"She's got an answer!" Ron pointed out the letter tied to the leg.
Harry hastily untied it and sat down to read it.
"Is it from sirius?" I asked. Ron nodded his head. "What does it say?"
Harry read it out loud.
Harry-
I'm flying north immediately. This news about your scar
is the latest in a series of strange rumors that have reached
me here. If it hurts again, go straight to dumbledore -
they're saying he's got moody out of retirement, which means
he's reading the signs, even if no one else is.
I'll be in touch soon. My best to ron, hermione and y/n.
Keep your eyes open, harry.
Sirius
"He's flying north?" I whispered. "He's coming back? Is he insane?"
"Dumbledore's reading what signs?" Ron looked perplexed. "Harry - what's up?"
Harry hit his forehead with his palm. "I shouldn't have told him!"
"What are you talking about?" Hermione said in surprise.
"It's made him think he's got to come back! Coming back, because he thinks I'm in trouble! And there's nothing wrong with me! And I haven't got anything for you," Harry snapped at hedwig, who was clicking her beak expectantly. "you'll have to go up to the owlery if you want food."
Hedwig gave him an extremely offended look before taking off for the open window.
"Harry." Hermione began, in a pacifying voice.
"I'm going to bed." He said shortly. "See you in the morning."
I'm sorry this was so short!
