One time someone young, but very intelligent, asked him; What's love, Jay?He smiled and thought very carefully. He thought about how to explain to a 15yr old boy, who can understand without actually understanding? How do you make them see in a way without misleading them?
"To be loved is to gain sustenance. Just like how we have water and food because a higher being is watching over us. We have air to breathe, we have light to see. We have support and love from family and friends because they love us. But to love is to sacrifice, without question, without waiting for anything in return"
He remembers looking down at Solo's big, innocent eyes, and the confusion in them. He brushed through his hair and smiles at him to brush it all off. But young Solo is still as confused as ever.
"Have you ever been in love before, Jay?" young Solo asks.
Jay smiles and shakes his head a little. "Are you having a crush, So?" He asks instead.
Solo shakes his head and answers, "No. I just don't understand why anybody would want to be in love. Mother was always lonely and I never see Father. He's never here and he never cared about me and Mother. I don't understand why people look for a partner, marry them, just to leave them."
Jay understands where he's coming from. But young Solo just can't see the whole picture yet.
"Don't talk about your father like that, So. He cares about you and Khun Ying so much. He's just working very hard to provide for you both," Jay says.
Solo pouts and folds his arms to his chest. "Why are you defending him? He never cared about you even if you do everything for him. He always makes you do a lot of stuff. Aren't you getting tired?" Solo says.
Jay frowns and answers, "I'm your father's secretary, So. It's my job. Khun Tan is not supposed to care about me."
Solo frowns even more and his eyebrows draw to a deep furrow. "Why isn't he supposed to care for you? You're family."
Jay smiles a little at this and shakes his head again, "You'll understand everything in time, So. When you're older, when it's your turn to be in love, you'll understand."
"Uh uh. I will not understand. I don't want to understand," Solo retorts. He shakes his head fervently.
"Okay. Off to bed, you. You will not have a Faen if you look like that." Jay teases.
Solo snorts and raises one perfect brow, "I have girls chasing after me ever since I can remember, Jay. It's me who doesn't want a Faen"
Jay smiles and thinks 'Of course. You look exactly like your father. Girls will be at each other's throat for you'.
He turns off the light in Solo's room and closes the door behind him. He checks his phone again to look at the work he has put off to tuck Solo to bed.
He defines love as self-sacrifice, without question, without waiting for anything in return. Just like how he has loved Khun Tan.
