A New Year

The celebration of a new year was not something you normally took part in. It reminded you of the day you were taken away from your family in order to become a Jedi. That day carries bittersweet feelings with it.

You were born on Alderaan, and you haven't been back since you left for the very first time. You had dim memories of your parents decorating the house for life day, and all of the decorations on the streets and in other's houses. Life day brought a community together. It brought the galaxy together.

And it also brought the new year in. Just a week after the life day celebration was another in honor of the year's change. You remember the parties. This was the only night of the year that you were allowed to stay up late.

The memories of that time are growing so distant that you fear if you do not remind yourself of them periodically, they'd just disappear.

As you stood in the empty Jedi council room, you watched the levels of Coruscant in front of you. Despite the large concentration of people, there were no decorations, no parties, and no celebrating. This wasn't any kind of political mandate, no, this was just a simple lack of morale.

It wasn't any one person's fault that Life day was forgotten throughout the galaxy. People had become too focused on the war to put any energy into anything else.

The war makes every day bleed together. The only reason you noticed the holiday season was because it was exactly three years ago that you met a special someone- and that was Captain Rex.

Rex has been your only source of joy for these years of war. The two of you became fast friends and compatible tactical partners, and that relationship budded into romance. It's been about a year since you considered your relationship official.

You heard familiar footsteps behind you in the empty room.

"I thought I might find you here." Your lover's voice said.

"Rex," you turned around to face him. "Are you even allowed in here?" You said.

He took both of your hands in his. "Probably not. But who's going to catch me? By this time most people are asleep."

You pressed a light kiss on his lips. He smiled at you, but you sighed.

"What is it, mesh'la?" He said. You loved it when he gave you mando'a pet names.

"Today marks the new year." You said.

"Oh, I guess you're right. I hadn't even noticed."

"It looks like no one did." You gestured out to the skyline, which looked the same as it always does. "No one acknowledged life day or the passing of the old year. It's as if time is becoming irrelevant. Have we been in this war so long that people have forgotten what life was like without it?"

"Well, I certainly couldn't tell you what life would be like without the war. And that's simply because without it, I wouldn't even be alive." Rex said.

You placed your hand gently on his cheek. "Then the war has brought at least one good thing."

"And it brought us together."

You chuckled. "Two good things."

"Well, it's the new year, isn't it? We should celebrate! I could round up some of the boys. I'm sure they'd be excited to party after these past few missions. We all could use a pick-me-up." Said Rex, trying to lighten the mood.

You gave him a soft smile. "That would be great." You said.

He joyfully smiled and gave you a kiss on the cheek. Then he turned on his heels and made his way to leave the room.

"Rex?" You said before he was fully gone.

"Yes, mesh'la?"

"I love you."

"I love you too."

The end

Just a bit of a short one that's ~seasonal~ and whatnot. I hope everyone's had a good holiday season!
