Leaving Dex's Diner to walk back to your apartment has never been a walk in the park. Every day you think to yourself "I'll leave earlier, then I won't have to worry as much." But you always end up staying late anyways.

You'd think that after getting catcalled 100 times a girl would learn her lesson. But it wasn't anything you couldn't handle.

There was a slight fog in the air as you walked home, a couple hours from dawn. You noticed the ever-present feeling of being watched as you strode with a false mask of confidence. You held your bag of possessions firmly and close to your body.

The fog became thicker as you started to reach your destination. You swallowed hard and you felt a pit in your stomach. The catcalls became more ominous as you couldn't even see where they came from anymore.

Suddenly one of the voices seemed very close.

Too close.

"Hey there, little lady. All alone in the dark?" A gravely, sickly voice said.

You quickly flipped out a switchblade and extended it towards the voice. You were shaking. No one had ever gotten close to you before. However, you still couldn't see them.

It wasn't long before you could, though.

"I'll take you someplace nice..." The large trandoshan said. There's no way you could take him in a fight.

"A lady shouldn't be out here all alone, it's dangerous." He kept speaking, even though you offered nothing in return.

All you could do was wish that he'd leave. But that was very unlikely.

"If you'll just come with me, I'm sure I can... help you." He said. You shuddered at the way he spoke. It made you feel violated already.

You extended your arm with the switchknife even farther towards him.

"No need for the knife, little lady. I don't bite."

You don't know what he thought he was accomplishing. Did he think you were actually fooled by his words? What kind of idiot did he take you for?

It made you wonder how many other girls he's tricked by exhibiting this behavior. Hopefully all of them are as smart as you are. However, you did leave a bar on the shady side of Coruscant in the middle of the night. That was not very smart.

Your inner chastisement was interrupted by the trandoshan's sudden lunge towards you. You ducked to the side and managed to start running. It wouldn't be long before he caught up to you, though. Trandoshans are excellent hunters.

Your run was beginning to slow to a jog, but the trandoshan could have sprinted another few hours. Soon he caught up to you, grabbing your arm. You switched out your knife again and slashed him on his hand, which made him let go of you briefly. But soon he managed to knock the knife from your grasp with his other hand.

One hand grabbing your wrist, he raised the other to land a knockout blow on your head. His swipe seemed in slow motion as it came toward you. There was no dodging this time.

But suddenly, a hand stopped his.

"Is this guy bothering you, ma'am?" Your mysterious savior said, his eyes locked on yours, not even sparing a look to the trandoshan.

You simply nodded. He turned his head toward your perpetrator and said in a low voice "I think you ought to head back home now."

The trandoshan laughed, ripping his arm away. "On whose authority?" He asked.

"My blasters', I'd say." Your savior said, pulling two DC-17 blaster pistols from his holsters, spinning them before pointing them at the trandoshan.

Scoffing, he raised his arms up and slowly backed away, then turned and broke into a sprint in the opposite direction.

You could finally breathe.

"Th-thank you... um.. sir.." you said, still recovering.

"Only my soldiers call me sir. The name's Rex." He said, bolstering his pistols and putting his hands on his hips. "It's pretty late for anyone to be out on their own, you know."

"I'm (Y/N). And you're out alone too." You said with a slight tone of sass.

"Oh, I'm never alone." Rex said, gesturing to a little ways away where you could see a bar with a bunch of men in it that looked... exactly the same. You looked back at Rex and realized who you were talking to.

"You're a soldier in the Grand Army of the Republic!" You said.

"That's right, I'm a captain under General Skywalker. But right now, I'm just a man who wants to make sure people like you are safe." He said. "Would you like me to walk with you the rest of the way to your home?" He asked.

This man is the most polite man you've ever met. You nodded.

You had walked for a few minutes now, chatting about what it's like to be in the middle of a war. Rex seemed troubled by the constant loss of the clones, or what he called his brothers, and you started to feel very sorry for him. You can't imagine what it's like to be in the middle of something so horrible. It's astonishing how honorable of a man he is.

A sudden sound came from some alleyway that was frightening, and you jumped closer to Rex, brushing his arm.

You were probably only five or so minutes away from your apartment now, and Rex had been unloading his feelings about the war. You really appreciated how he opened up to you about it so much.

"It seems like you have a lot to say about the war." You said.

"I guess I don't have anyone to talk about it with that's not already experiencing it all with me." He said.

"Well, if you ever need to vent to anyone, I'm here to listen. I didn't know the war could be so horrible. All we see is the politics of it all, not the actual hardships on the battlefield."

Rex was silent for a little while, and you saw a small smile creep onto his face. He looked down at your hand swaying next to his, and then he held his hand out for you to hold. You obliged and continued to walk on, feeling his large, warm hand on your smaller, colder hand.

You approached the door to your apartment building. "Thank you, Rex. Really. I thought I was a goner." You said.

"You're welcome, (Y/N). Whenever you need someone to escort you from a bar at dawn, I'm your man." He said with a wink.

You said your goodbyes and went inside. Maybe leaving Dex's Diner in the middle of the night wasn't such a bad idea after all.

The end.
