A night at 79's was always well-deserved after a hard mission. As a medic for the 501st you were happy to serve them in any way you could, and that included making sure they got home safely. Fives, Jesse and Hardcase were pretty much drunk out of their minds right away. They were usually only obnoxious to each other at this point, but later on in the night they might start bothering other people... and then you would want to step in and contain them. You usually never drank so that you could look after everyone if anything happened. This particular mission left most of the clones feeling down, even if it was technically a success. Every battle, whether we win or lose, means that we lose more living, breathing people who mean everything to the clones. You can't imagine losing one of your siblings every time you go out to do what you were created for.
Sometimes it's too much when you think about the clones' situations in life. You long for the day when the Republic wins the war and they all get to go do whatever they want. They're all so different, with different personalities and skills, they could really do some good for the galaxy.
As you were deep in thought you noticed more of the clones around the bar. Kix was sitting drinking a glass of water and talking to some clones from another battalion you didn't know that well. He usually didn't have a drink either- he coped with stress by talking to others. You were happy to see him feeling better.
As you were "taking inventory" of the 501st clones, you noticed Captain Rex walk out of the doorway, looking upset. You decided to go after him. Could he still be upset about earlier?
"(Y/N)! Get back here!" Rex screamed as you ran out into the battlefield, blaster bolts streaming just inches above your head.
"No! I can save them! I just need to get them out of here!" You yelled back, trying to drag an injured clone away from the battle so you could save him. Your small body couldn't drag him away fast enough.
Suddenly someone else was there, hoisting the injured man up to carry him. It was Rex.
Immediately you felt guilty. You put others in danger needlessly in order to be reckless and try to save someone. But what were you supposed to do...
Wordlessly, the two of you ran back to a medical tent not too far from the battle, and Rex lingered a bit before returning to it.
"I understand you want to save lives and do your job, but we clones also have a job to do." He said, sounding defeated.
You looked at him, confused. "I can't just let people die." You started at work on the injured clone, removing his armor. "What is your name, soldier?" You asked. Given they were conscious, you always asked the troopers for their name.
He replied with a raspy voice. "Cam." He said.
"I know. But this is what we clones were made to do." Rex said in a lower tone of voice. "I'm glad you want to help, but I don't want you getting injured as well."
He looked as if he wanted to say something else, but as you were busy trying to save someone's life, you didn't pry.
"I don't care what you were 'made for.'" You said. "You're living beings, and it's my responsibility to help in any way that I can. It doesn't matter to me if even you think you're disposable." You said, almost immediately regretting the last part. But Rex didn't look offended, he mostly looked assured.
"Just... be careful, (Y/N)." Rex said, lingering for just a half a second too long before leaving the tent and returning to the battle.
You were able to save Cam, and he was on his way to recovery when the Republic won the battle.
