You pushed the men back as rocks fell all around you. You were able to get Captain Rex and most of the 501st out, and using the force you were able to join them in the retreat. You caught up to run with Rex."There's still men out there!" Rex yelled, referring to a group of clones who got separated when the rocks fell. To your knowledge they were okay, but you couldn't go back to get them out right now. Separatists forces were closing in on you from multiple directions, and the only way to get the largest percentage of men surviving was to retreat for now.
"There's no time!" You yelled back at Rex, avoiding the blaster bolts coming from everywhere. You and Rex found a large rock to duck behind for cover, while the rest of the 501st kept retreating as ordered.
"We left a whole half a platoon out there! We have to go back!" Rex argued. Usually he didn't question your leadership, but when it came to the lives of his men, he became very adamant. Ever since the battle of Umbara, which you were never present for, but had heard what happened, Rex was different. You could tell he still trusted his Jedi generals, but he had a desperate tone of voice...
"Captain, I know. But look around." You grunted as pieces of rock nearly missed your face. "We're pinned. We have to be more strategic about this!"
Rex pounded his fist on the ground. "I know. I'm sorry, General."
"I know you mean well, Rex." You said, staring at his visor, trying to see his eyes. Before you spent too long searching for them, you snapped your attention back to the literal war going on around the two of you. "Here's what we'll do. We'll wait for the seppies to stop firing, once our men are out of harm's way. I can see an opening to where the others are; I can move some of those rocks with the force to get them out if we get close enough."
"If we go right through the middle like before, they'll see us and start blasting." Rex said, lifting a finger to his chin, reminiscent of Master Obi wan. "I think we should take the high ground." He said, pointing to the ledge above where the trapped clones are.
"That's perfect, Rex." You said, and motioned for him to follow you to better cover. You could wait there until nighttime when it would be safer to go out. The separatists didn't know that the clones were even trapped there, so they would be safe for now.
You found a cave to hide away in, and you got deep enough so that the blaster fires weren't so loud, but you could still hear them if they died down. Rex took off his helmet, and you noticed him wince as he sat down on the ground.
"What's wrong?" You asked plainly.
"Just a few scrapes is all." He said, obviously understating it. You scanned his body with your eyes and noticed a gash on his right arm where his armor didn't cover. You moved closer to him to examine his wound. You could feel the tension grow as he turned his face away from you, trying to hide his expression.
The captain had a hard of time of being vulnerable.
"General, it's fine. I get hit like this in battles all the time." The way he said that with such casual tone made your heart ache a bit. How horrible it must be to be raised to believe that you were meant to be damaged, and even killed in this war. Your Jedi training telling you to hold every life in importance wasn't for nothing. Every life was to be protected, and that most definitely included the men under your leadership.
"No, it's not fine. None of this is fine. None of this is normal." You said.
"General, what are you saying?"
You stood up in a fury. "Don't even call me General! Just call me (Y/N)! I didn't ask for the title of General. It was just appointed to me. You didn't ask to be put in this war. You didn't ask to be made on a planet full of cloning laboratories run by shady people who got their orders from who-the-kriff-knows! Does that not seem like the least Jedi-thing to do? Order a whole army of clones behind closed doors? Come to think of it, none of this is Jedi-like! I shouldn't be a general! We're meant to be keepers of the peace, not warmongers!"
