Day 26: Write an argument
“Don’t get into any trouble you two.” Their mother said, slamming the door and locking it behind her. It was the first time Harriett and Jade were locked in the same room in a while. They didn’t dare move from their spot until they couldn’t hear their parents’ car anymore. Both of their ears had been trained to that sound for awhile now, but for different reasons; Jade was the good girl, but Harriett was more of a rebel.
After their parents were gone for the night Jade took the opportunity to read, and take online classes with the laptop she managed to sneak in the last time she was allowed to go into town. She would go on it until she heard the car coming down the street. Her parents haven’t noticed it yet.
As for Harriett, she used the opportunity to open her window and get some fresh air. She longed for freedom, and took what little she could in small doses. She would close it as soon as she heard the car coming down the street. Her parents haven’t noticed it yet.
“Come here sissy.” Jade said, pulling Harriett into her arms. Harriett hugged her back tightly. When they pulled away they still held each others’ arms.
“We have to get out of here.” Harriett said urgently, looking into her sister’s eyes. Jade’s mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.
“Hazz, I-”
“Jade, this is not a healthy way to live! We need to get out of here!” Harriett returned, on the verge of tears.
“Harriett, we can’t. They’ll come after us.” Jade said sternly. Harriett stepped back.
“They’ve brainwashed you.” She said, shaking her head.
“Harriett.”
“You’ve been with them for too long. But just because you’re gonna sit here and let them rot your brain doesn’t mean I’m gonna let them do it to me!” She cried.
“Harriett listen to me!” Jade yelled. Harriett pressed her lips into a tight line. “You know Gerard and Mikey?” Harriett nodded. She and Mikey were quite close; they had been locked in the same room together many times. “Me and Gerard have been forming a plan to get you and Mikey out of here.” Harriett shook her head.
“Wha-”
“Gerard sees the same fire in Mikey’s eyes as I do in yours. We’re not gonna leave you two behind, and you need freedom more. And let’s face it, we’re more suitable to get you guys out of here than you are yourselves.” Jade said. She took a few steps closer to her sister.
“The Ways are coming over in a couple of weeks. Gerard told me cuz his parents actually keep him informed. By then I would have gotten you and Mikey plane tickets out of here and the keys to a house. Somewhere quiet without many cars driving by, I promise.” Harriett smiled.
“I thought I saw a laptop in that bag.”
“Yeah, just don’t tell our parents.” Jade winked.
