Day 28: Start a story with “I thought I saw…”

“I thought I saw…”

“Saw what, Luke?” Kane asked sternly. He was always grumpy when he was woken up from a nap.

“Nothing. Sorry, Kane.” Luke said quietly, looking down at the floor. Kane sighed and pulled his younger brother into a hug.

“I know it’s hard Luke. It’s hard on all of us; but I know how close you two were. But she’s not coming back.” It was Luke’s turn to sigh.

“I know, Kane.” Kane patted his brother on the back and went back to his bunk to resume his nap. Luke flopped down on the couch and rubbed his face. He missed her so much. He wish she didn’t have to leave them… I should’ve done something.

There was a knock on the door, and Luke confusedly went to answer it. When he opened the door, his eyes widened. She gave him a shy smile and wave.

“Hi Luke.” She said quietly. He didn’t hesitate to grab her into a hug, and wrapped his arms around her as tightly as he could, hoping with everything in him that she wouldn’t disappear when he did so.

She didn’t.

She hugged back just as tight, burying her face into his shoulder like she always did. He did the same and burst into tears, and she let him cry. She held him as tightly as she possibly could, never letting up for a second.

He had his best friend back.
