The first week of April brought about heavy rainfall. The days were dark and cloudy, and the rain was pouring down all through the day and night. That Wednesday morning was no different. It was around 6:30 in the morning, yet there was no trace of sunlight. Elena was awakened by the loud tapping of raindrops against her bedroom window. She stirred around, rubbing her eyes, and got out of the bed. She looked over at Henry, who was fast asleep snoring lightly. Elena kissed his head and tucked the sheets around him carefully.
Elena slipped on her robe, wrapping the strings around her waist, and went out of the room. She walked towards Phoenix's room and opened the door slowly.
Phoenix was sitting in the hammock, beside the window, surrounded by pillows, with a warm blanket wrapped around her. She had a book in her hands and was reading it intently, oblivious to the surroundings around her.
Elena smiled, watching Phoenix. It wasn't her first time where she'd come to check on her and find her wide awake, reading a book. Elena recalled the days when Phoenix was a baby. She was a very calm baby for the most part except when she had to sleep. She would always wake up crying frantically, within minutes of falling asleep. Henry and Elena had tried every possible way to get her sleep, but all their efforts were in vain.
Until one night, where Elena was rehearsing for a play at school. Henry was enacting out the role of an owl, making loud hooting noises, flapping his arms, trying his best to distract Elena so that she would stop practicing her monologue and go to sleep. None of them realized that Phoenix had been watching them and slowly fell asleep into a peaceful sleep. Since then, Henry and Elena would enact stories every night and wait till she had fallen asleep. And that's how stories and books had become an essential part of Phoenix's life.
Elena walked over to Phoenix and tapped her head, making Phoenix squeal in surprise. The lights in the room started flickering instantaneously and stopped when Phoenix's eyes met Elena, who was watching her closely.
Phoenix sighed in relief. "Mom! Why do you always sneak up on me?" She exclaimed.
"I do not. You end up doing things that you are not supposed to." Elena replied, sitting down on the bed. "Why were you awake?" Elena questioned.
"I couldn't sleep. I had a weird dream." Phoenix replied, placing a bookmark on the page she was reading and closed the book.
"Come here," Elena said, patting the bed beside her. Phoenix hopped out of the hammock and placed the book on the pillows, and jumped onto the bed. She laid her head on Elena's laps and stifled a yawn, cuddling her.
"What were you reading?" Elena asked as she gently stroked her hair. "The Big Friendly Giant," Phoenix answered, pointing to the book.
Elena laughed. "Thought I was a giant, didn't you?" She asked. "That would've been fun. Imagine meeting an actual giant," Phoenix said, wondering if she would ever meet one. For, if the giants were anything like the BFG, they would've been well hidden, making things difficult for her.
"Oh! I love gobbling down human beens bet you human been is crunchy. Then again, you is so small I wouldn't even have to chew you." Elena mimicked, pulling Phoenix's cheeks.
"But you wouldn't, you are THE BIG FRIENDLY GIANT, the BFG," Phoenix yelled dramatically, as she stood up on the bed, with her arms stretched out.
"I is. I is a dream blowing giant," Elena said solemnly. Phoenix grinned and jumped onto her, clinging to her like a koala bear.
"Are you now?" Henry asked, looking amused as he watched them from the doorframe.
"You think I is swizzfiggling you? Elena asked sharply, giving him a long hard stare.
