"You're going to send me off to Slytherin just because I am ambitious?" Scarlett demanded the old magic hat, which seemed rather amused at the eleven-year-old girl.
"Among other things yes," the hat replied.
"So, you're telling me the rest of the students don't have any ambitions?"
"Slytherin will aid you on your path, Miss. Selwyn. I can see the potential you possess and trust me, Miss. Selwyn, you'll understand this in time."
Before Scarlett could protest the hat yelled out Slytherin. She ripped the hat off her head and marched to the cheering Slytherin table, where Draco Malfoy sat at the far end of the table with an amused look on his face.
"Shut it, Malfoy," Scarlett snapped, as she turned away from him. A red-headed boy, she assumed to be Ronald Weasley, was then sorted into Gryffindor, leaving only Phoenix and Blaise.
"White, Phoenix!"
Phoenix carefully made her way to the podium. She could feel several stares following her every move until the hat was placed on her head. There was a brief silence when the hat suddenly spoke up, "I never thought I'd sort someone like him again."
"I'm sorry, who are you talking about?" Phoenix questioned warily. She desperately hoped it wasn't referring to Frey.
"Heavens no, child. But you're more like your parents than you know," he hummed, "I was talking about a boy, who walked these very halls centuries ago. His magic runs through your veins," he continued.
"He did great things, but you, I know exactly where to put you, Gry –"
"No, please," Phoenix interrupted him, "Scar, she's in Slytherin," and Draco, she thought silently, hoping the hat wouldn't notice.
The hat chuckled, "You would rather choose the ones who don't share your beliefs than those who do?" he questioned.
"They're my friends," she corrected him, "And I would do anything for them."
The hat smiled, "Your powers, your choices will always be questioned... conflicting paths will forever haunt you."
"I don't care," Phoenix declared, "If I've made a choice, I will find a way to live with it. I will not let the road not taken haunt me or stop me from doing the right thing," she added boldly.
"Hmm... Well, Miss. White, I stand by my choice. I am absolutely certain that you belong in Gryffindor. But... if this is what you choose... better be –"
"SLYTHERIN!"
Phoenix sighed in relief as the hat was gently pulled off her head. She turned to face Professor McGonagall who gently smiled down at her, "Off you go, Miss. White," she said, pointing to the Slytherin table.
"Thank you, Professor," she replied quietly, before making her way to the Slytherin table.
Draco and Scarlett were surprised at the hat's declaration. They looked at each other momentarily. Both questioning the sorting hat's judgement and sanity. Nevertheless, they were happy to see Phoenix as she took her seat at the Slytherin table beside Scarlett.
Scarlett laughed as she brought Phoenix into a quick side hug, "I have to admit, I am surprised you're not in Gryffindor with Jack," she said, pointing to Jack, who was already looking at them.
Phoenix turned around and met his eyes immediately. Guilt washed through her at the sight of him being seated at the Gryffindor table. He was sitting next to a couple of first-years, with a small smile on his face. He waved at Phoenix, as he watched Blaise take a seat next to her. Phoenix frowned at the sight. This wasn't what she wanted. Sure, she wanted to be in the same house as Scarlett and Draco, but she didn't intend on leaving Jack alone in Gryffindor.
