long time no see everyone...
happy new year!!
i'm so, so sorry for my little leave-- i've been unbelievably busy with work and packing to move back into my apartment for school this week, but i do have this to post that i've been working on for a few weeks
i hope you enjoy 😊
relationship: married w daughter, evie
you curled your legs further underneath you, shifting to get more comfortable on the soft couch you sat upon. your daughter sat in front of you, resting her head against your knee and occasionally nuzzling against you for comfort. the warmth of the fireplace could be felt from your seat across the room, and the morning sun complimented the illumination of the lights strung up around your living room.
it was your first christmas with evie, having adopted her in january, and to say you and vinnie were excited was an understatement. you'd decorated your home full of reds and whites, complemented with shades of green, all chosen by evie, and it helped fill you all with excitement for the holidays.
this morning, you'd been the first to wake up, slowly padding down to the living room fully expecting to see evie playing with the presents you'd left her in her stocking, only to be met with the tissue paper untouched, and stocking still laying packed full on the floor.
you walked into the kitchen to start making coffee and breakfast, turning on some gentle music in the process while you waited for both vinnie and evie to wake up.
as you leaned back against the island countertop, you took a moment to simply soak in the memory of the room, and the peaceful feeling that enveloped you. with it being evie's first christmas with you and vinnie, you'd both made it a priority to make sure to reiterate that she was a part of the hacker family, and that she was loved and wanted just as much as anyone in your family.
the tree was full of random ornaments from your's and vinnie's families, and as you took a closer glance at it, your heart filled to see two small hand-made ornaments hanging front and center.
when decorating the tree, evie had suddenly gotten quiet, closing in on herself like she did sometimes, and when vinnie had finally coaxed her into talking about what was on her mind, she had asked if she could hang ornaments of her parents that she'd been given before she was put up for adoption.
you and vinnie had both furrowed your eyebrows at the fact that evie felt uncomfortable to ask, and she had quietly explained that families she'd stayed with in previous years didn't like her putting ornaments on a tree that belonged to a family that she wasn't a part of.
you'd both been appalled at the idea of grown adults saying something like that to a child, especially after welcoming her into their home, and reassured her that you'd both love nothing more than to have them wherever she'd like on the tree.
they were small and clay with fingerprints imprinted on both shapes, one painted red and the other plain white. so very simple, but the look on her face when she'd been given permission to hang them said everything she couldn't: they were everything to her, and who were you to take that away from her?
stepping away from the counter, the warm mug enclosed in your palm, your smile grew large on your lips as you heard the small footsteps shuffle around above you with a distant squeal of delight following shortly.
"momma!" evie exclaimed as she stomped down the stairs, vinnie close on her heels. you opened your mouth wide in a grin and spun her small frame around in your arms. a loud shriek escaped your daughter's mouth and you met vinnie's gaze, the look of adoration sitting gently among his features.
