relationship: dating, long term, established relationship

"it was an accident," you whispered, a lame attempt to try and calm yourself down. "we used a condom, i'm on the pill, it was an accident." you scrunched your eyes shut, not wanting to stare at the slender plastic any longer. you could feel tears beginning to build up behind your eyes, and the thought of holding them back seemed to be too much work. a small cry escaped your lips as you slid down the wall across from the vanity inside your bathroom with your palms pressed against your eyes.

"how did... how," you thought aloud, looking back up to the counter where the test rested so innocently on the counter. you reached your hand up and grabbed it, bringing it to lay in your palm to observe it. sure enough, there they were, two lines across the viewing window, representing a positive pregnancy test. positive, the word rebounded around your brain loudly, but your confusion was louder.

you didn't understand what happened; you and vinnie were always careful, and you couldn't bring yourself to remember a time when you hadn't taken your pill, or when the condom broke.

"why me," you whispered into your fist, tears beginning to fall at uneven rates. "what did i do to deserve this." you gasped to catch your breath, and in realization that you would have to tell your boyfriend about what was going on.

you froze, the thought of having to say those words out loud to the one person you needed most at the moment paralyzed you with fear. "what if he doesn't want to help me," you wondered, letting the thought spiral into something you didn't have control over. a louder sob erupted from your closed mouth at the thought of losing vinnie over this. it technically takes two to make a baby, right? you thought, so he can't just blame it on me, unless he really wanted to. you knew he wouldn't do that, he was the most understanding person you'd ever been with, but you couldn't help but let the thought sit in the back of your mind, what if he really would leave you over something like this?

"babe? you in there?" you heard vinnie on the other side of the door, and the sound of his voice alone made you freeze. you cleared your throat to sound less scratchy before responding.

"yeah, yeah i am." you stared down at the test once more before shoving it into your pocket, and slowly standing up to face yourself in the mirror.

"are you okay? do you need anything? the tampon box should still be in there from when you left them last," he said, leaving you to roll your eyes at the irony of the situation. if only i needed tampons at the moment, you thought, wanting nothing more than to have that be your biggest worry.

"uh, yeah, i'm-- i'm good. i see them. thanks, v," you replied, now splashing your face with water in hopes to eliminate the evidence of the breakdown you'd just had.

"you sure? you sound off, baby." he was concerned, and you couldn't blame him. you had to have been in the bathroom for at least twenty minutes at this point, but you didn't know how you were going to face him after this. you looked down to the floor and closed your eyes, taking a deep breath before answering.

"i--" you hiccuped, a small crack in your voice almost giving it away.

"y/n? hey, hey, please open the door? open it for me, yeah?" vinnie's voice was gentle. he knew something was wrong, but he didn't want to overstep your privacy. you began to cry at the tone of his voice alone, because you knew that once he found out what the problem was, there was potential that he wouldn't sound like that any longer.
