Chapter 24: Cold

Ira

I was so anxious to see Kostas and my friends again that I didn't sleep at all last night, especially after I called him. Once the girls told him the plan, I didn't want to hang up, and neither did he, but Ashley's phone was almost dead, so I had to.

Now I was sitting on the ground next to Ashley, who I've grown close to over the short time we've been together. I thought of her as a new best friend, and she liked a lot of what Cristy and I liked. She was an avid reader like me as well as an avid shopper like Cristy.

"You ready to see your mate?" she asked me with a smirk.

I nodded excitedly. My stomach had thousands of butterflies and wouldn't stop at all. I was also excited to help Rick get away from his dad and then once this is all over I'd go see a movie with Cristy and all my new friends. Patty slowly stood up and started to signal Kostas' pack with a small light. After a second a signal came back.

"Here we go," Patty said, sitting on her heels, ready to pounce.

"Get eady to bolt to the lake," Ashley said to me.

I nodded and suddenly the front door of the house broke down and people came running out, but they were already fighting each other. What the-

"Now!" Patty screamed.

We all leaped up and started running out of the trees and yelling out battle cries. Ashley and I ran toward the lake, but our path started to get full of wolves who were already fighting. I hope none of them were Rick.

"We need to help Rick!" I shouted to Ashley.

"No time! We need to get you to-" she stopped talking and then stopped running. I stopped beside her as the others ran around us.

"What's wrong?" I asked, suddenly panicking.

"Do...do you smell that?" she asked.

I smelled the air and smelt nothing but the lake. "No."

"It...it smells like crispy apples and...and lemon," she said, walking in a small circle.

I was getting a little worried now. Our path was completely blocked by fighting, barking wolves and my friend was going crazy.

"Mate!" she shouted, taking off running toward the fighting.

"Ashley!" I shouted, running after her.

I was thankful that the girls gave me a brace to wear on my leg so I could still run and not have it hurt so much. As I trotted after my friend, I finally saw something I never thought I'd see.

I saw Ashley in the arms of someone I know.

Ashley

I traced the smell and ran passed a couple fighting wolves and saw a brown wolf on top of a grey and black spotted wolf. The one underneath smelled of apples and lemon, and Jamie howled for joy at finding our mate.

Suddenly the brown wolf got closer to my mate and I growled. My mate looked at me and he froze, just staring at me, but I didn't stand still. I charged at the brown wolf and sent him back, but his claw caught my arm and I yelled more in surprise than pain.

I was suddenly wrapped in a pair of strong arms and I was too surprised to hug him back. He was almost naked but he wore the black shorts that every werewolf wore, and for some reason I was a little disappointed at that.

"Mine," he growled in a sexy voice.

My stomach flipped over three times before I hugged him back and breathed in his scent. It felt so relaxing and I didn't even hear the other wolves fighting around us. Suddenly he pulled back and I whimpered a bit, bit he thought that I was in pain.

"Oh gosh, you're bleeding!" he said, looking at my arm. I, however, was looking at his curly brown hair and his deep brown eyes, his full lips, his tanned skin and eight-pack, and then back at his face to see a smirk upon his lips. I felt myself blush and looked away and right into the eyes of a worried Ira.

"So, that's where you went," she said, panting. She was really out of shape.

"Ira!" my mate cried. "What are you doing here?! Dad's going to kill you!"

Dad? Wait, oh-no...

"Sorry Rick," Ira said. "But we have a plan."

"Wait, You're Rick Holloway?" Ashley asked surpised with maybe a hint of sadness.

"Yeah, why?" he asked, sounding concerned.

"Well..."

"We're here to kill your dad," I finished, knowing she didn't want to say it.

Rick looked back to me, but he didn't object to it. He suddenly nodded and then kissed Ashley's forehead. It was so sweet, but I suddenly missed my mate. Apparently Rick noticed this because he then gave me a large bear hug, a hug that a big brother would give a little sister.

"Don't worry," he said. "He'll be here soon."

"Look out!" Ashley shouted.

I was suddenly knocked to the ground with Rick by a large paw and Ashley suddenly shifted into a brown and black wolf and started to fight the wolf that attacked us. Rick jumped up and started to attack the wolves as well to keep them away from Ashley.

I was of no use here, but I was dizzy and my ears were ringing. I leaped up and started running to the lake where I was supposed to be. I was supposed to lure Holloway to the water because the cold would hurt him. I remember Rick telling that in fifth grade, but that was a long time ago and he might've grown out of it. I thought it weird altogether.

I stumbled into the water and my fingers started stinging.

"Cold!" I said, quickly bringing my fingers out of the water.

I was almost waist deep in the water, hoping to lure him out here. I know he'll come because Rick said that he wanted me dead, so he'll want to kill me himself. I looked back and saw the three packs fighting and I kept looking for my white wolf, but I couldn't see him anywhere.

Where are you Kostas? I asked myself, looking everywhere.

I was suddenly dragged down into the water and my breath escaped me as the cold water hit my face. I screamed under the face and fought my way to the surface and I gulped in the air before I was brought under again. I was held down by strong hands around my arm and my neck. Was he trying to drown me?

Kostas! I screamed in my mind.

The strong hands tightened their grip round my neck and water entered my throat as I gasped. I was then pulled above the water and I started coughing up water that was in my lungs and vomiting water. I still didn't know who was holding me, but I just hoped that someone noticed soon. I was now thigh deep in the water, and I was freezing cold with the small breeze that blew by.

"That's enough!"
