Mesmerizing...

"Y/n," Rob's voice cut through the memory. He sounded worried.

She waved a hand, not looking at him, to shut him up. "I'm still..." She didn't finish, concentrating. He sighed and continued stroking the back of her hand/paw. She had barely noticed that he'd even started doing that.

"Okay. I'll just go eat something, or-?"

She tugged his hand back. "No, I- I want you here while I do this..."

He couldn't just say no, could he?

He didn't. He sat back down, watching her expression, and started stroking her hand again.

Before she could smile at him for staying, another memory hit.

"Daddy," She said, looking over her dinner to her dad, who barely registered her existence. "um... do you think... do you think mom will come?"

He finally looked over at the sound of his disappeared wife. He shrugged, his eyes betraying his nonchalant attitude. It was clear it was very distressing without her. The house had even begun to show the signs of neglect, despite his daughter's insistence to tidy around like her mom used to.

"I don't know," He finally told her.

"Okay," She mumbled, dissatisfied. She picked at her turkey and peeked again at her dad. There seemed to be glistening drops of water on his cheeks. Another blink and they were gone. With a sigh, she tried the turkey- dry, and dad couldn't even make gravy or add some kind of condiment to it; their poverty had skyrocketed in her mom's leaving.

"Well," His voice startled her, she wasn't expecting him to speak. "we can still have a great Christmas. Felicity is coming over later, didn't I tell you?"

He had. "No, that sounds exciting," Y/n lied. "is she... bringing presents?" The lack of presents that year had disappointed the girl, but she didn't voice it.

"I think so," He chewed some turkey, but placed the fork down- also had no intention of finishing his meal.

"Cool," She murmured. She pushed her plate as far as she could away without seeming ungrateful. "do you mind if I go play with Barney?"

He nodded. "Go crazy, kid."

She ran off into the living room, and when she passed the wall where she could be safely hidden from sight, she grabbed Barney and clutched him to her chest tightly. Barney was her last present from her mom. The dinosaur was forever smiling up at her. Well, she thought, at least someone is happy around here.

She got up and passed the t.v, not even registering it being on.

She simulated a happy-go-lucky world for Barney where he played all day and no mommy left home without even a word of goodbye. What looks could you give someone that signify that? The one her mom gave her was full of significance.

After a while, her dad came into the living room, and she felt his eyes on her while she played by the tree, pretending that Barney was an expert climber. When she turned to look at him and give him a small smile, she saw he wasn't were she thought he was standing. Her eyes ran over the room to the couch, which was situated in front of the t.v.

He was stood there, his eyes no longer on her back. The mesmerized look on his face that she could see in the mirror across from him was scary. Every limb in his body seemed inclined toward the t.v as if he wanted to jump toward it and hold it for dear life.

"M/n," He mumbled.

"What?" Y/n said, staring at him. He was stumbling closer.

"M/n- no! Come back!" He suddenly cried, actually springing at the t.v. Y/n jumped up to watch, nearly going to stop the collision. Her body seemed rooted to the ground, though.

To her surprise- and horror- he slid through the glass that was the screen and disappeared. The t.v switched off with a 'swoooooch'.

She fell back onto her butt, small and fast breaths going through her body. After what seemed like an eternity, the doorbell rang. She made no move to get it. Her eyes had long strayed from the t.v and there was no understanding of anything anymore.

Eventually, Felicity must have tried the door- and found it unlocked- or she had her own key, but she was suddenly in the room.

"Y/n?" She said, in a soothing tone. "Where's your dad?"

Her voice trembled as she spoke in a dull voice. "He left the t.v on."
