Y/n's second day at school passed fairly well. When I say fairly well, I mean, it sucked more than the first day.

Miss Simian was surprised that Y/n handed in her essay early but pretended that it didn't bother her. As she read it before class, a suspicious look grew on her face. But it didn't stop her from putting Y/n in for the debate team.

"I'm sorry, I don't think I heard you correctly, miss," Y/n said as politely as possible. "I'm terrible at arguing and I really think-"

Miss Simian gave her famous smile, which is very scary to look at. Y/n immediately backed down. "Oh, but with a student as-" she read a word from the essay. "astute as you, I don't see a reason why not."

Y/n saw a million but didn't point them out. She was already annoyed at Gumball, now the worst teacher was forcing her to join the debate team? Y/n could think of some fantastic words to say to both.

Luckily the first period (obviously English) passed quick enough it was just a blur. Y/n just wished that it was the last day of school and she was heading off to high school after a long summer.

But high school seemed further away than her mother, and that was really saying something.

You're probably wondering why a mother would suddenly pack up and leave you one night. Y/n wondered that also, sat at her desk in science. She'd wondered that countless times, but her efforts were fruitless.

Y/n had a perfectly normal life until fifth grade. That's when her normally sane mom packed her bags as the nearly ten-year-old Y/n watched from the doorway. The little girl had no idea what was happening.

She remembered asking her mom if they were going on holiday. And her mom- her mom-

Well, she didn't want to think about it. It scared her even then, four years after. The teacher asking the class a question that jolted her back to Elmore Junior High from wherever she'd gone in her mind.

"...and what can you tell me about wolf packs? Hm... Y/n?"

Teachers had that annoying thing of asking the most dazed and zoned out kids the questions when they wanted. Y/n blinked as though shook awake.

"I- erm- what was the question again?" She whispered to her nearest classmate, the 80s vibe girl with green hair. Before the girl could repeat the question for her, the teacher startled them both.

"I asked- and yes, I heard you, Y/n- what can you tell me about wolf packs? I have been talking about them for the entire lesson."

Y/n thought for a moment. What had she learned about wolf packs? She didn't know much but was thankful for the fact that she had a foster family with a mom who was a half-wolf, half-dachshund.

"The mother wolf, or the alpha's mate, cares mainly for the cubs and only leaves for hunting purposes. They may even die for their cubs, and do anything for their survival." For some reason, she thought about her mom through the whole speech. Was her mom the real female alpha? Did she have a real reason for laughing at her holiday comment, then trying to leave, but being stopped by Y/n's dad?

Her dad had tried to reason with her mom.

"Look, m/n, please stop! We have- we have lot's to do at the shop, you can't just-"

"It's all bullshit, d/n, don't be a dumbass." Her mom had cut him off. Y/n had felt a sense of pride for her mom- the type not afraid to swear in front of her offspring. Then her mom strode right past her dad's disbelieving face.

That's why Y/n's favorite word was 'dumbass'. In whatever language. It was kind of her mom's last present to her.

While that was on her mind- and the events thereafter- she barely heard her teacher's praise for the answer. She didn't really do much schoolwork after that. Her mind was too full of emotion to concentrate.

So when Penny started telling her about the play on Saturday- the last thing on Y/n's mind, honestly- she was surprised to see she was even there with her in the hallway.

When Y/n arrived home she didn't care about the awkward questions from Anais who was with her and the duo; she went straight for the secret entrance and knocked. If she went in uninvited the duo might've thought that she was getting too comfortable with Rob. If Gumball even remembered his name correctly.

The entrance opened as she knocked and she whisper-shouted down the basement stairs. "Rob?"

There was no answer. He was probably out.

She sighed, imagining herself going to bed early, the weight of adulthood already pressing on her not-quite-yet fourteen-year-old shoulders. That's when Anais said from the window, "Who the heck is tying a rope to that tree? That branch will break!"

Y/n shut the secret entrance- happy to see Anais hadn't noticed a thing- and walked over to the little bunny. "What?"

"That guy is tying a rope to that tree. Clearly, he has no idea what he's doing." Anais said airly, waving her hand to show Y/n where the guy was outside. Then she disappeared.

Y/n's heart leaped when she saw Rob, trying and failing to tie another trap on a tree across the street. Y/n wondered if he wasn't trying to catch Gumball but to have another scenario where she accidentally stood in the loop and was flung upside down. But she told herself that was silly, and no matter how much she liked Rob, he was her friend, and would probably never like her back.
