(Kind of a short chapter sry)
Shuichi waved Kokichi as the other was walking out the door with a smile. Once he closed the door he frowned. The little accident with Kaede kept bugging him. It was the first time he had seen Kaede act this way towards someone else...and the way she was able to shrug it off was... well it was something strange.
Was...Was she really the vile person every one of his friends made her out to be? For the first time...he's really seen it. But was it wrong of him to think so bad about his girlfriend? Shouldn't he defend her? But he saw it with his own eyes...he saw how she tripped him and brushed it off without a single thought. This internal monologue continued to bother him tirelessly.
Finally, when he laid in bed, staring at the ceiling, his girlfriend next to him, he asked her
"Kaede...you love me right?"
"What...?" Kaede asked sleepily turning his way to face him.
"Do you think our relationship is... like that of other couples?" he asked. Kaede tilted her head to the side.
"Like other couples...?" she asked again not really sure what he was talking about.
"Is it good I mean...like do you really love me?" he asked, hoping to get an answer
"Oh. Of course, I do yeah. Totally." she said tiredly. Shuichi grimaced. For the first time, her words felt...wrong...and insincere.
"Because sometimes I get the feeling you don't..." he spoke quietly. He felt Kaede hold his wrist and for once look at him with an awake stern look.
"Are you doubting me? I give you my love and yet you doubt me and accuse me of using you. I feel hurt" she spoke quietly "It really hurts me you think of me so lowly you accuse me of such horrible things" she added, holding tighter onto his hand. Shuichi shook his head.
"N-No... that's not what I meant..." he said quickly. Even though she said she was hurt Shuichi felt as though her words were not genuine pain but a veiled threat towards him. It didn't feel right.
"But it was. Why would you think that then?" she asked, her grip on him tightening. He winced slightly as her nails dug in his skin
"Well, it's just that Rantaro and Tsumugi have been saying that-" he said only to be cut off.
"And have you thought those two might just be trying to get you to turn against me?" she asked "Tsumugi never liked me and has never once told a nice word about me and Rantaro's just a drama queen who lives off conflict." she pointed out. That's sort of true...but no...no, that's wrong.
"They wouldn't do this. They have nothing to gain from that." Shuichi protested.
"We've both known them for years Shuichi, they're just lying to stir up conflict" she continued. Shuichi shook his head. "Remember how they talked trash about Angie and Korekiyo when they were going out?" she then asked.
"But that was a long time ago and Angie and Korekiyo were acting inappropriately. They even apologized." he argued.
"But it wasn't nice of them was it?" she spoke calmly.
"You did it too thou-" she cut him off him.
"They're not angels that you can rely on for their every word. What about when Tsumugi purposely ruined your black jacket she said looked pretty because it reminded her of an anime character and wanted to order before they sold out with coffee?"
"It was an accident! She was sleep-deprived from work" he responded.
"Or the time she took your hat to use for her cosplay without your permission?" she asked again continuing to tighten her hold on his wrist.
"S-She didn't know it was sentimental and gave it back before anything happened" he said. Kaede shook her head.
"What about when she ditched you at Comicon and you didn't where she was. She left you in the middle of a crowd despite your social anxiety." she spoke again "I'd never be as inconsiderate to leave you there. And Rantaro's even worse. They're not good people either, they're toxic." Shuichi looked at the ground.
"But she didn't mean to do it! She's been waiting months for that event I understand why she would be as excited to...Why are you even bringing this up?!" he asked frustrated.
"I've got a better question for you, honey. Shuichi, are you sure you love ME? Because you seem pretty desperate to pin the blame on me for your toxic relationships." she asked. Shuichi struggled to respond, managing to only let out a few incoherent noises before shutting up. Kaede sighed letting go of his wrist. "If that's it, then I'm going to bed. G'night Shuichi" she said turning away from him.
Shuichi brought his wrist closer to his chest to realize, there were bruises forming from how tightly she held onto it. He gulped trying to think over what she said. She was right about some things but the way she said it carried a foul undertone he never noticed before. He felt even more conflicted than before.
What is he supposed to do now? He can't talk to Kaede and can he even talk to his friends? What if they're as bad as Kaede says they are? What if Kaede is as bad as they say?
...
Maybe he can talk to Ouma-kun?
