•Day of Surgery•
Today was the day they would be meeting their baby, at only 19 weeks. Ashton Blake will be in the NICU for many months.
Miranda Taylor headed to the hospital super early in the morning, Doc and Mel were meeting them there.
Mel and Doc came into the room together. "Good morning, we want to go over what to expect during and after surgery, if that's okay with you." Doc said. "Good morning, of course." Miranda said. " during surgery we will go in to take out baby boy, make sure everything looks good with momma, send baby boy up to the NICU; as long as things look good with him. We'll close you up. After surgery, you will be wheeled to the NICU and get meet your son." Mel said. "Great!" Miranda said. "I do however, want you to know your baby will be so tiny, and will need lots of medicine, love, and time to be able to go home in a few months." Doc said. "Will he have a feeding tube?" Taylor asked. "Yes, and oxygen." Mel said. "Okay." Taylor said. Miranda kissed him, and whispered "I love you." "I love you too, I'll see you and baby boy on the other side." Taylor said. She kissed him. "You ready?" Mel asked. "Yeah." Miranda said. "Come on, Taylor, I'll show you where you can wait." Doc said. "Thank you." Taylor said. "How long?" He asked, sitting in the waiting room. "About 1 hour  and 30 minutes." Doc said. "If anything goes unplanned a nurse will be out to update you." Doc said. "Thank you." Taylor said.
Mel and Doc started the surgery. At the time of the laparotomy, the abdomen was full of blood. Packs were removed slowly, but there was diffuse bleeding from the undersurface of the liver. Doc and Mel worked fast, and had the bleeding under control. The baby took his very first breath, and on his way to the NICU. He will be placed on oxygen, a feeding tube, and lights that he will continue to grow on for the first few months of his life.
•After Surgery•
The anastasia had worked off, Miranda was having full conversations. "How are you feeling?" Mel asked. "I'm good!" Miranda said. "How's Ashton Blake?" Taylor asked. "He's doing wonderful, he's in the NICU, he's not going to need oxygen for long." Mel said. "That's wonderful." Miranda and Taylor said. "Even better news, he took his first breath without any help, doing great for 19 weeks." Mel said. "That's good to hear, when can we see him?" Miranda asked. "Anytime you'd like." Mel said. "Can we go now?" Miranda asked. "Let me get you a wheelchair." Mel said. She got her a wheelchair, and headed to the NICU. "For safety reasons, we have to ask you to wear a mask and gloves." Mel said. They put on the mask and gloves, and she took them to Ashton Blake. "Hi buddy." Taylor said. "Can we touch him?" Taylor asked. "Yeah, of course! He just has to stay under the light." Mel said. "We can't hold him?" Miranda asked. "Not yet, sorry." Mel said. Miranda nodded. Taylor and Miranda held Ashton Blake's little hands and talked to him. "You are one strong baby boy." Miranda said, with tears filling up in her eyes. They sat for hours talking to baby Ashton.
Taylor and Miranda were in love with their sweet baby boy; Ashton.
They  were really upset they couldn't hold him, but they could hold in for the rest of his life, once he gains enough weight. Mel took Miranda and Taylor back to the room, after a few hours of meeting baby boy. "You can go back any time you would like, once you are discharged you can stay with him or go home, and come back in the morning up to you." Mel said. " We are not leaving our baby." Miranda said. "I  totally understand." Mel said. Miranda nodded.  Miranda drifted off back asleep, Tayloor held  her hand and kissed it. "I love you so much." Taylor whispered. " I love you too." She whispered. He kissed her forehead. He stood up, and walked to the NICU.
He walked over to Ashton after putting on a mask and pair of gloves.
"Hi, son." Taylor said. "You and your mommy are so strong. Me and mommy have been waiting for you." Taylor said. "How's it going?" Mel asked, coming to check on Ashton. "It's good." Taylor said. He held his son's hand and sat their with him for about 30 minutes.
Miranda got woken up by Mel checking her vitals. "How are you feeling?" Mel asked. "I'm feeling okay, do you know where Taylor is?" Miranda asked. "He was with Ashton." Mel said. "I can take you to them, if you want." Mel said. "No, thank you." Miranda said. "Of course." Mel said.
After a few minutes Taylor walked back into her room. "Hey you." Miranda said. "Hi, my love. How are you feeling?" Taylor asked. "Good, how's Ashton?" Miranda asked. "He's a handsome boy." Taylor said. "That he is." Miranda said. Taylor got into the bed next to her, she laid her head on his shoulder, and gave him a kiss. "I love you." Miranda said. "I love you, and our son so much, more then anything in this world, baby." Taylor said.
Miranda drifted back to sleep, and Taylor sat next to her in the bed, with her head on his shoulder.
A few hours later
Miranda and Taylor went to visit Ashton in the NICU. "How's my boy doing?" Miranda asked, in her mom voice. "He seems to still be doing wonderful." Mel said with a smile. "Good! I'm so glad." Miranda said. "I'm still progressing that he was growing on my liver." Miranda said. "It's something you don't see very often." Mel said.
While Taylor and Miranda were sitting with Ashton Mel walked in a with a lady. "Mrs. & Mr. Kinney, this is Erin Burnett with NBC News she want to know if she could get a picture of you and Ashton and tell your story." Mel asked. "Of course." Miranda said. "Do you mind if I record this conversation?" Erin asked. "Not at all." Miranda said. "Good Evening, I'm here at Kindred Hospital Chicago North, with Taylor Kinney and Miranda Kinney, who you might know from NBC Chicago Fire who both play Firefighters, but not today... Today they play mom and dad." Erin said, in a joking manner. "Today, we are going to hear their story how their son; Ashton was growing in the liver." Erin said. "Ashton was growing on Miranda's liver for 19 weeks. Today, he was brought into the world, and is currently in the NICU." Erin said, and continued with the story. She took their picture and Ashton's picture. "Thank you." Erin said. "No problem." Taylor said.
They spent the rest of the evening sitting with Ashton Blake.
