[We're not who we used to be
We're just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat]
When Via and I got home, I put her to bed in her nursery. I was already preparing myself for the long night to come. I went back downstairs, running my hands through my hair as I kept replaying what happened that night. The blinding flashes. The yelling crowd. The crying baby I held. It was all too much and it was terrifying. I couldn't understand how the boys went through that. I went into the kitchen and set a pot of water on the stove. As I waited for it to boil, I leaned against the counter as the flashes kept appearing in my head.
At this rate, I'll never sleep.
I took the kettle off the stove when it began to whistle and turned off the stove in the process. I dunk the calming tea into the water and let it sit while I went to the pantry and grabbed myself a snack. I settled on a couple cookies. When the front door was opened and laughs were heard, I walked to the entry of the kitchen.
"Hey, Emily!" Stacey greeted, removing her jacket. Her voice was laced in surprise as she glanced at Niall, who was staring at me with shock and confusion.
"Did you go out?" He asked. I crossed my arms and nodded.
"I did, actually. Yeah, if you answered your phone, then you would've known where." I glared.
"Well, sorry. Stacey and I were in a movie." He spoke, clearly not sorry.
"Okay, I'll leave you two to sort this out." Stacey said quietly and continued her way up the stairs.
"What the hell, Emily?" Niall snapped.
"What the hell, me?! You're the one I should be saying that to, Niall!"
"You?! Oh, poor little Emily didn't get Niall's attention, oh grow up!"
"You wanna know where I was? Since you were obviously too busy with Stacey, I was with Via at Urgent Care." I snapped at him. He looked at me, furrowing his eyebrows.
"What?"
"Yeah. Via got a fever over a hundred and three, Niall! I called almost twenty times because one; she needed you and two; we were fucking mobbed! Since you didn't pay any attention to what was going on with our daughter, I called Harry and Louis. Niall, what's going on with you?!"
"With me?! What do you mean with me?! I'm the only one being reasonable here!"
"And why's that?!"
"You aren't around anymore, Emily! What do you expect me to do? Sit around while you're off doing God knows what?!"
I scoffed, "Is that really how you see it?! Because the way I see it, you're letting the fame get to your head and not helping around with Via like you promised. Niall, what happened to 'we're in this together'? What happened to 'I'm going to be there every step of the way'? You weren't there while I took care of Via! You weren't there with her at the Urgent Care where they did the tests that made my heart break, Niall! She screamed, she cried, and I didn't know what to do! Ever since Via came around, all you've been is a shitty father!" I screamed, tears running down my cheeks as I snapped at him.
"Well then, maybe I'm not cut out to be a father."
"Maybe you're not." His eyes showed at least two percent guilt, while the other ninety eight showed nothing but hatred and annoyance. "And my daughter doesn't deserve to have a no-show father." I walked away from him, beginning my way to the stairs.
"Don't walk away from me, Emily!"
"And why not?! That's all you've been doing since Via was born!" I breathed heavily as I looked at him through my blurred vision. He stayed quiet, only looking at me. I sighed out and continued my jog up the stairs to grab our things, yet again.
"Lou? Hey, um, mind if Via and I stay the night again?" I asked through the phone as I grabbed clothes for me and Via.
"What did he do now?" Louis asked, anger already in his voice.
"I'll explain later." I sighed.
"My place is always open for you and Via, Em. You know that."
"I do, but I also know that asking first is the polite thing to do."
Louis chuckled, "Okay then, yes you two can come over. I'll leave the door unlocked."
"Thanks, Lou."
Getting out of the house was the hard part. Niall remained downstairs as I brought Via with me already in her car seat. "Now, where do you think you're going?"
"Somewhere where Via's safe." I told him.
"You can't just take my daughter, Emily!"
"Now you say that?!" I glared as I got to the door. "The boys are more of a father for her than you'll ever be!"
"Well if they're such a good father, why don't you marry one of them?!"
I scoffed, "So mature of you." I retorted, opening the door and leaving with Via and our bags. If Stacey hadn't come into the picture, then none of this would've happened.
But it did. And my daughter doesn't deserve that asshole for a father.
