Kailee knew that the discovery of her mate was supposed to be a good thing, but she was being hunted down by vampires, and Kailee had the distinct feeling that he would not be happy if he were to be dragged into it.
Kailee wasn't really sure about his species, human or no, since she hadn't had the opportunity to get close enough to the guy. Next to that, there were way too many smells around the cafeteria to concentrate on one with food and people.
She glanced back over and quickly noticed that he was staring at her. Kailee blushed and ducked her head, looking down at her so called "food". Whether it was edible or not, Kailee didn't know, but she wasn't taking any chances.
"Hi! I'm Jeremy, and you're the new girl?" Kailee heard a deep voice ask kindly.
She darted her eyes up to catch sight of her mate smiling at her. "Yeah, I'm Kailee," she said quietly. Kailee wasn't normally shy or nervous in any way, but it was her mate. The circumstances were much different this time around.
The werewolf heard Chris snicker, and she kicked him in the shin with her foot in retaliation. He yelped, causing Lacey and Jeremy to look at him weirdly. He chuckled nervously and gave them a sheepish smile, waving it off and glaring at her when their eyes drifted away from him.
Kailee mentally snickered and turned her attention back to her mate. "I assumed you wouldn't talk to me. After all, nobody else is," she told him.
"You're the one who told them not to," he reminded her with raised eyebrows and an amused smile.
"I know that, but I have...issues. I don't think being around people helps any," she confessed. It was true. Kailee's anger could get the best of her, and it wasn't a pretty sight. Lacey had experienced it first hand, and that wasn't even at full capacity. She had the capability to get much more violent.
"Well, can I be your friend?" Jeremy asked her, partly serious, but mostly teasing.
"Sure!" She replied, maybe a little too enthusiastically. She felt like some school girl with some little crush, it was embarrassing.
He flashed a charming smile her way that was accompanied by a playful wink before waving in departure and sitting back down at his table with his friends. As he walked away, his scent hit Kailee like a brick, and her expression dropped immediately.
"So, is he a werewolf?" Chris asked insistently.
"No," Kailee replied stonily.
Lacey and Chris gave her sympathetic looks at the admission. Being human wasn't a problem, not in the way most would take it. Unfortunately, since he wasn't a werewolf, it would be much harder to explain than normal if Kailee were to ever work up the guts to tell him the truth.

The day went by slowly, and Kailee was relieved when the day was finally over. As they all climbed into Chris's truck and drove off, Lacey turned back to look Kailee in the eye from her spot in the front passenger seat. "So, your mate is human?" Lacey asked to confirm it.
"I said he wasn't a werewolf, I never said he was human," Kailee said and turned back to face the window, blocking all sounds out.
Oh My Holy Doggies! Looks like we've got another supernatural coming into the picture! But not a werewolf! What do you think Jeremy is?
